MFP Easy installs Australian-made Aqua Technics shells across South East Queensland, built with Graphene Nano-Tech construction. The longest fibreglass lap pool shells in that range are the 11.00m Kensington and the 11.48m Saint Azur. Every price we publish is an installed price rather than a shell price.

What makes a fibreglass pool a lap pool?

A fibreglass lap pool, spelled fiberglass in the US, is defined by its swim corridor rather than by a size class. The shell is long and narrow. The floor holds an even depth so the swim is not interrupted. The entry steps sit at the ends or along one side so they take nothing off the lane. Compass Pools Melbourne puts a lap pool at 3 to 10 times longer than it is wide. A family pool sits closer to twice its width. Shape alone does not make a lap pool, because length is a separate requirement. Eight metres is the practical minimum for stroke-and-turn swimming at home. A shell shorter than 8m is not a lap pool, however narrow it is. Fibreglass reaches well past that minimum, and every shell MFP Easy installs is moulded and delivered in one piece.

How long does a fibreglass lap pool need to be?

A fibreglass lap pool needs at least 8m of length, and every metre past 8m buys a longer stroke before the wall. Compass Pools Melbourne says the term lap pool covers anything from 8m to 30m in residential use. The competition standards sit well above that: a 50m Olympic pool, and a 25m half-Olympic pool with eight 2.5m lanes. A single moulded shell reaches the low end of the residential band.

The shells that clear the 8m minimum by a margin sit in the large fibreglass pool range: the 9.00m Amalfi and Westminster, the 9.5m Saint Louis, the 11.00m Kensington and the 11.48m Saint Azur. The length ladder runs in three rungs: the 8m threshold, then two bands of longer shells.

  • 8.00m, the practical minimum. Stroke-and-turn swimming at home starts at 8m. A swimmer gets a lane and a wall to turn on at this length, and the turns arrive often.
  • 9.00m to 9.5m, a lane in a family-width shell. The Amalfi is 9.00m by 3.60m and grades from 0.90m to 2.00m deep. The Westminster is 9.00m by 4.00m and grades from 1.00m to 1.80m. The Saint Louis is 9.5m by 4.0m and grades from 1.37m to 2.00m. Each one carries a swim length above the 8m threshold on a shell wide enough to work as a family pool as well.
  • 11.00m to 11.48m, the longest lane we install. The Kensington is 11.00m by 4.00m and grades from 1.00m to 2.00m deep. The Saint Azur is 11.48m by 4.45m and grades from 1.37m to 1.96m. It is both the longest and the widest shell in the range.

Searchers also reach lap length in imperial units. The three common rungs convert cleanly: 25 yards is 22.86m, 75 feet is the same 22.86m, and 40 feet is 12.19m. No shell MFP Easy installs reaches any of those three lengths, and the longest is the 11.48m Saint Azur. Compass Pools Melbourne states that road-transport constraints limit a standard fibreglass shell to about 12m, and reaches greater lengths only by linking shells on site, where two linked shells give 18 to 22m and three give 23 to 30m. On those figures a 22.86m pool is a linked-shell build.

How wide and how deep does a lap pool have to be to swim properly?

One swimmer needs 2.5m of internal width to swim comfortably, and two swimmers side by side need 4m or more. A classic lap pool holds one constant depth from end to end, and the long shells MFP Easy installs are graded from a shallow end to a deep end instead. Compass Pools Melbourne gives both width figures. It also gives the narrower public-pool numbers: public lanes run 1.8m to 2.0m with rope dividers rather than solid walls. A residential lane needs at least 0.5m more than a commercial one. Two metres of width is swimmable and narrower than comfortable.

Quoted shell width and swim width are different numbers. Compass Pools Melbourne gives its Fastlane as 2.8m external and 2.5m internal, once the structural wall is deducted. A perimeter safety ledge takes more again. Complete Fibreglass Pool Kits states that an 8m by 4m shell with a 125mm ledge leaves usable space closer to 7.75m by 3.75m. That deduction costs about 2 square metres of swimming area. Whether a quoted width is the outside of the mould or the water inside it varies from builder to builder, and the figure that decides whether a lane fits is the internal one.

Width is one axis of the full fibreglass pool dimensions and sizes ladder. That ladder starts at the 2.00m and 2.15m narrow corridors, runs through 2.5m to 3.0m slimline shells and 3.3m to 3.8m family widths, and finishes at 4.00m to 4.45m.

Depth is where a purpose-built lap pool and a long family shell part company. A constant depth from end to end means a turn works the same at either wall. The graded shells run shallow to deep: the Amalfi from 0.90m to 2.00m, the Kensington from 1.00m to 2.00m and the Westminster from 1.00m to 1.80m. The Saint Louis grades from 1.37m to 2.00m and the Saint Azur from 1.37m to 1.96m.

What does a fibreglass lap pool cost installed?

MFP Easy installs fibreglass pools in South East Queensland from $46,053 to $83,332, all-inclusive of pool, standard installation, filtration and handover under standard site conditions. Seven things sit inside that band: excavation, the crane lift, premium filtration, a magnesium mineral chlorinator, LED lighting, council approval fees and lifetime warranties.

The approval fees are not a formality in Queensland. Any pool holding more than 300mm of water needs council building approval and a compliant safety barrier before it can be filled. The pool also has to be recorded on the state pool safety register. MFP Easy handles the council paperwork, engineering, certification and fencing sign-off, and installs in 10 to 12 weeks from contract to water.

Site-specific work sits outside the standard-conditions figure. A block with a slab to remove, stormwater to divert or a road closure to book is priced against its own conditions. Where a shell lands inside that band comes down to the block, so the installed price for a lap pool on your block is worked out against your access width, excavation method and crane class rather than a national average.

Can you buy a lap pool shell or kit on its own?

Fibreglass lap pool kits are sold in Australia, and a kit price is not an installed price. Complete Fibreglass Pool Kits lists a DIY kit for the Noosa Lap at $20,600, and quotes installation at a further $10,000 to $15,000. The crane, excavation, retaining, traffic management and soil cartage are priced separately on top of both. Swimming Pool Kits Direct delivers kits kerbside and sells shells up to a 13m lap pool. MFP Easy publishes installed prices.

A lap-length fibreglass shell arrives on a truck as one moulded piece. The Amalfi weighs 926kg, the Westminster 988kg, the Saint Louis 1,187kg, the Kensington 1,223kg and the Saint Azur 1,286kg. We crane every shell off the delivery truck and lower it into the excavation, and we size the crane off the lift distance. A lift inside 15m takes a 13T to 16T small slew. From 15m to 20m it takes a 40T medium slew, and from 20m to 30m a 55T or 60T standard slew. From 30m to 36m it takes a 60T standard slew with counterweight, and from 36m to 48m an 80T to 120T large slew. A longer lift distance puts the shell into a higher crane class.

Digging the hole is decided by a different measurement. We choose the excavation method off the measured access width down the side of the house. Under 1.38m goes in with a mini excavator. From 1.38m to 1.57m takes a mini excavator with a standard bobcat, and 1.57m and over takes full-size plant. At 3m or more of access, with the truck within 5m of the hole, we reverse the truck to the hole. The spoil then has to come out. Cart-out distance from the hole to the truck is priced in four brackets: 0 to 5m, 0 to 20m, 20 to 40m and 40 to 60m. Where the lift or the truck occupies the road, traffic management is booked by tier. The tiers are Level 1 stop-go one lane, Level 2 standard road closure, Level 3 large road closure and Level 4 all-day road closure.

A kit buyer prices each of those lines separately and carries the coordination between them. An installed price carries them as one number.

Which fibreglass pool swims best as a lap pool?

The 11.48m Saint Azur swims best, with the 11.00m Kensington behind it. Both are the longest shells MFP Easy installs. Both clear the 8m minimum by three metres or more, and both give a swimmer the fewest turns per length swum in the range.

A narrow side return gets a different answer. The narrowest shells MFP Easy installs are the 7.00m by 2.00m Messina and the 6.50m by 2.15m Sentosa. Neither is a lap pool. Both sit under the 8m length threshold, and 2.00m of shell width sits under the 2.5m internal minimum Compass Pools Melbourne gives for one swimmer.

Compass Pools Melbourne states that a counter-current system turns a 6m to 8m pool into endless swimming. It prices one at $8,000 to $25,000 as a retrofit, or about $5,000 to $15,000 integrated at build time. In a yard too short for an 8m shell, a swim-jet counter-current system supplies the swimming distance the shell cannot. An above-ground lap pool is a different product: every shell MFP Easy installs is craned off the truck and set into an excavation.

Heating scales with the shape as well as the volume. Compass Pools Melbourne recommends 20 to 30 percent more heating capacity for a lap pool than for a standard pool holding the same water. A long thin surface loses more heat.

Lap pool questions, answered

Is 10m long enough for a lap pool?

Yes. Ten metres clears the 8m practical minimum for stroke-and-turn swimming at home by two metres. It also sits inside the 8m to 30m band Compass Pools Melbourne gives for residential lap pools. In the MFP Easy range the shells at or above 10m are the 11.00m Kensington and the 11.48m Saint Azur.

Can you do laps in an 8m pool?

Yes, at the minimum length. Eight metres is the practical minimum for stroke-and-turn swimming at home, so an 8m shell gives a swimmer a lane and a wall to turn on. Turns arrive more often than they do in an 11m shell. Width decides the swim as much as length does: 2.5m of internal width is the comfortable single-lane minimum Compass Pools Melbourne gives.

Is 2m wide enough for a lap pool?

Two metres is swimmable and narrower than comfortable. Compass Pools Melbourne puts the comfortable single-lane minimum at 2.5m of internal width. It notes that public lanes are 1.8m to 2.0m wide and use rope dividers in place of solid walls, and that a residential lane needs at least 0.5m more than a commercial one. Advertised shell width drops again once the structural wall is deducted.

What is the standard size for a lap pool?

No single standard size exists for a residential lap pool. Compass Pools Melbourne says the term covers anything from 8m to 30m at home. The competition standards are a 50m Olympic pool and a 25m half-Olympic pool with eight 2.5m lanes. The working figures at home are 8m of length as a minimum and 2.5m of internal width for one swimmer.

How much does it cost to build a 25 metre lap pool?

Compass Pools Melbourne prices a 25m three-shell build at $180,000 to $280,000-plus in the Melbourne market. It caps a single transported fibreglass shell at about 12m, and reaches 23m to 30m by linking three shells on site. On those figures a 25m pool is a linked-shell build rather than a single moulded shell. No shell in the MFP Easy range reaches 25m.

What is the average cost of installing a lap pool in Australia?

No reliable national average exists, because published lap pool figures mix two different products. Complete Fibreglass Pool Kits prices a DIY kit and its installation as separate line items, so a kit figure is not a finished-pool price. MFP Easy publishes South East Queensland installed prices, which carry the excavation, the crane lift and the council approval fees in the one figure.
