    Yes. A crane can lift a fibreglass pool shell over the roofline of a house and lower it into the excavation in the backyard. Crane operators and pool installers treat that lift as a routine operation. The conditions set out here apply to residential blocks in Brisbane and the serviceable South East Queensland area. They describe what is normally achievable on a block of that kind. They do not replace an assessment of your own site by the installer and the crane crew.

    Can a crane lift a fibreglass pool shell into a Brisbane backyard

    Crane selection is what decides the lift on a given block. A crane can carry a fibreglass pool shell over high walls, fences and two-storey houses. The size and reach of the crane scale with how far it has to swing the load. Powerlines running across the frontage are a frequent complication on Brisbane and Gold Coast blocks. They can dictate the crane size on their own. Where a second storey or a set of powerlines sits in the swing path, a bigger machine clears it. The answer stays yes on most residential sites once the crane is matched to the obstacle.

    A fibreglass pool shell is placed by machine because of what it is. The shell arrives as one prefabricated piece, up to about 11 m long and 4 m wide. It is large and bulky, even though it is lighter than other pool types. Across the pools we install, an empty shell weighs from about 379 kg to about 1,223 kg. The light end of that range is a 4 m plunge pool and the heavy end an 11 m lap pool. It works out at roughly 100 kg for every metre of length. Weight is the easier half of the problem. Moving a moulded piece that size along a standard driveway or a narrow side path is close to impossible on most suburban blocks. The pool is delivered on a truck, and a machine has to take it from the truck to the hole. Where it cannot be driven in, that machine is a crane, hired for the day and set up at the front of the property. The crew checks alignment over the excavation before the shell goes down.

    A crane suits the job because it lifts a large object quickly and under control. Compared with manual handling, craneage can give the crew more precision and more safety while the pool is raised and lowered. It takes the strenuous lifting and dragging out of the day, which is where muscle strain and back injuries come from. Doing that work by machine reduces the manual labour the placement would otherwise absorb. None of it removes the site conditions that govern the lift. The crane still needs somewhere to stand, firm ground under it, and a clear path over the property.

    Site-access conditions that determine a crane lift

    Site access is how the excavator, the trucks and the crane reach the backyard. It is the single biggest variable in most South East Queensland installs. The width of the side path decides which route the pool takes, and a crane enters the job when the shell cannot be driven in.

    Four conditions then decide whether the crane lift itself can go ahead on that block.

    • A workable crane setup position at the front of the property. The crane sets up on the street frontage and swings the load from there. The frontage has to be wide enough for the machine, its outriggers and the swing. A residential street too narrow to hold the crane rules the over-the-house lift out. Where the crane has to occupy the road, the setup also takes a traffic control crew.
    • Boom reach from that setup position to the hole. The crane holds the shell at a load radius, the horizontal distance from the machine to the shell hanging over the excavation. A hole further back on the block sits at a longer radius, and a longer radius takes a bigger machine to hold the shell out that far. Reach, rather than the weight of the shell, is what an over-the-house lift is sized around. Where the house sits too deep on the lot for the crane to reach past it, the over-the-house lift is ruled out.
    • A clear lift path over the property. The pool shell travels through the air from the truck to the hole, so everything under that arc has to clear. Overhead wires, tree branches, walls, fences and the roofline itself all sit in the way, and branches may need a permit before they can be cut. Where the clearance is there, crane operators attach the shell and carry it clear of high walls and other obstructions, leaving the property undamaged. Power lines running too close to that path rule the lift out as well.
    • Ground firm and level enough to carry the crane. The crane transfers its weight into the ground through outriggers. Soft, uneven or sloping ground makes crane setup difficult and even unsafe. A driveway that cannot carry the loaded crane fails the same test.

    The ground that decides where a crane can stand is the same ground the dig has to get through, so a difficult site can affect both operations. A block with rock under the topsoil can carry both a heavier crane requirement and rock excavation costs on the dig.

    The sequence runs in one direction only. The shell is manufactured off site and delivered prefabricated on a truck once the excavation is complete, then placed straight into the ground and backfilled. The hole and its base have to be ready on the day the crane and the truck arrive. Craning therefore depends on the pool excavation being completed first, and a delay in the dig moves the crane booking with it.

    Precision is what the crane buys on the day. The crane holds the pool shell above the excavation while the crew lines it up over the prepared base. It then lowers the shell slowly onto that base, so the pool sits where it was set out. Because the shell travels through the air, the lift needs little to no ground preparation. The lawn, garden beds and paving it passes over are left as they are. The shell finishes seated in its designated position, with the ground and the landscaping intact.

    Who lifts and places the shell

    Two parties handle the pool shell on delivery day. The crane crew take it off the truck and swing it over the house. The pool builders take it the last part of the way into position. The table sets out where each one's work starts and stops.

    Where the crane crew's work ends

    Crane operators attach the pool structure and lift it clear of high walls and other obstructions. Their responsibility covers the machine, the rigging and the flight path. Crane hire providers supply the crane itself and, in many cases, the crew that operates it. The pool installer books the lift as part of the installation, and owns what happens once the shell is over the hole. That is where the pool builders take over for the final positioning. The boundary matters on the day, because the crane is billing time while the shell is being lined up.

    Alternatives when a crane is not the right fit

    When on-site excavation machinery is the better choice than a crane

    An excavator can be the better machine for setting the pool shell when the site makes a crane awkward. An excavator is smaller and more manoeuvrable than a crane. It works on blocks with limited access, overhead obstacles, or nowhere to set a crane up at the frontage. Fibreglass shells, and smaller models in particular, often fall within an excavator's lifting capacity. Where the excavator is already on site for the dig, it can be used for the lift as well. That eliminates the need for a separate crane booking, along with the coordination and waiting time that comes with it. Some installers prefer the excavator for the placement itself. It allows more precise levelling and a gentler, more controlled set-down that reduces the risk of shell damage. Which machine suits a given site is a call for the installer. Constrained access is one of the conditions that moves what the installation costs either way.

    Other ways a shell reaches a hard-access backyard

    On blocks with no usable side path, a crane can solve the dig as well as the placement. Some installers lift the digger into the backyard with a crane and run a conveyor belt out to the street to remove the spoil. That does away with the need for traditional side access altogether.

    Craning remains the standard method for getting a pool over a house. In tricky situations, in tight urban spaces or in remote locations, helicopters have been used to lift pools into place instead. A helicopter is noisier and more expensive than a crane, so it stays an option for sites that leave no other route.

    What the crane adds to the quote

    A drive-in access is the cheaper path. Once a crane is involved, the lift becomes a line item of its own. That happens when a fence, a carport or a neighbour's boundary blocks the side of the house. Powerlines across the frontage act on the same line through the crane size they dictate. A longer swing calls for a larger crane, and the price follows the machine. Hiring a crane can be expensive where the job needs a long-reach lift over a house or sits in a tight urban street.

    Crane hire is billed by the hour and by the job. Most crane rentals carry a four-hour or eight-hour minimum charge, whatever the lift takes on the day. Setup runs one to two hours while the crew places the outriggers and attaches the counterweights. Mobilisation, the travel from the equipment yard to your street and back, is charged on top. Higher demand in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne lifts those rates, and limited availability in regional areas can add transport fees.
