Can fibreglass pools be custom made?

No, not as a one-off shape. Every fibreglass pool shell is moulded at a factory from a fixed mould, and that mould cannot be altered for an individual order. The shell's outline, its depth grade and everything else moulded into it are set by the model you choose. Custom fibreglass pools are specified by selection. The model, the gelcoat colour, the coping and paving surrounds, the fencing and the equipment package are all chosen per order and priced line by line in the quote. A concrete pool works the other way around. A concrete pool is formed on site, so its outline and its depth can be drawn to suit the block it goes into. MFP Easy installs 40 shell models in 5 size categories: round, small, medium, large and lap. For most buyers the shape and size question is answered inside that range.

What can you customise on a fibreglass pool?

On a fibreglass pool you choose the shell model, the gelcoat colour, the waterline tile, the coping and paving surrounds, the fencing, the filtration and sanitisation package and the heating. These are the decisions that shape a quote, with the chosen items priced line by line and the size category following from the model:

  • Shell model. Choosing the model fixes the pool's outline, its depth grade and everything moulded into the shell, which is why the model decision is the shape decision.
  • Size category. A model's size category comes with the model you choose.
  • Gelcoat colour. The gelcoat is the coloured surface layer of the shell. The colour is chosen per order from the colour range.
  • Waterline tile. The tile band that runs along the waterline is a separate per-order choice and a separate line in the quote.
  • Coping and paving. The coping finishes the top edge of the shell and the paving forms the area around the pool. Both are chosen per order and quoted for your block.
  • Pool fencing. Fencing is quoted either as flat-top metal or as frameless glass, and the choice is priced per order.
  • Filtration and sanitisation package. The pump, filter and water-treatment equipment are quoted together as a package for the pool you have chosen.
  • Heating. Heating is quoted either as a heat pump or as a blanket and roller.

LED lighting, spa jets, water features, deck jets, hand rails and a robotic cleaner are quoted as individual items.

How do you see a custom pool design in your own yard before you build?

MFP Easy produces a free custom 3D render of the pool in your own yard before you commit to anything. The render shows the visible decisions: the model, the gelcoat colour, the coping and the paving, placed in a 3D concept of your own yard.

The model in the concept is the model that gets installed, so the shape decision is judged in the space the pool will occupy. A brochure photograph shows a finished pool in someone else's yard.

How many pool shapes and sizes can you choose from?

MFP Easy installs a 40-model range of fibreglass pool shapes and sizes, sorted into 5 size categories: round, small, medium, large and lap. The round category holds the design-certified round shells. The lap category holds the shells over 8 metres. Small, medium and large group the rest of the range by size.

Forty moulded models cover most of what buyers mean by a custom shape and size, without a custom mould. A new fibreglass mould is not made for one order.

How much do custom fibreglass pools cost in Brisbane?

In Brisbane, installed prices run from about $46,000 to about $109,000 depending on size and options, and our fibreglass pool pricing quiz prices the size and options you choose. A small fibreglass pool starts at about $46,000 installed. A medium fibreglass pool starts at about $58,000 installed. A large fibreglass pool runs to about $109,000 installed. Each of those figures is a base specification, and each comes from live MFP Easy quoting.

The shell is roughly a quarter to a third of an installed price. The rest of the price pays for the excavation, the crane, the base, the filtration install, the coping and surrounds, the certification and the site works. The certification and approvals stack alone costs about $2,800 to $3,400.

Options are what move a quote inside the installed price range, and so do the conditions on your block. Site access is the factor we most often see move an excavation price, and tight access can triple the excavation cost. Items a bare-bones quote leaves out total $7,000 to $10,000 or more, so a price is only comparable against the specification it covers. Anything that depends on your block is confirmed in your quote once we measure.

When should you choose a concrete pool instead?

Choose a concrete pool when the outline you want does not exist as a mould. A concrete pool is formed on site, so a genuinely one-off shape, a non-standard depth or a pool built to an irregular boundary is concrete work.

The trade-offs run both ways, and each side is a plain fact. On installed cost, Canstar (January 2025) puts the average concrete inground pool at $50,000 to $75,000, with projects reaching $100,000 or more; MFP Easy's installed prices in Brisbane are the $46,000 to $109,000 band given above. On build time, industry guides from JKO Pool Construction put a concrete build at 8 to 12 weeks on site, including a cure period of around 30 days before the finishing work, while JKO puts a fibreglass shell's on-site installation at 2 to 4 weeks. On the interior finish, the common Australian concrete finishes, pebblecrete and quartz render, are resurfaced roughly every 15 to 20 years, a figure Australian pool renovators agree on; a fibreglass gelcoat is not resurfaced on a schedule.

MFP Easy builds fibreglass pools in South East Queensland and does not build concrete pools.

FAQs

What is the downside of a fibreglass pool?

The shape is fixed by the mould. A fibreglass pool shell is moulded before it reaches site, so the outline, the depth grade and everything moulded into the shell come with the model and cannot be changed for one order. A buyer who wants an outline that is not in the range has to build in concrete. Inside the range the rest stays open: gelcoat colour, surrounds, fencing and equipment are all chosen per order.

Can you get a custom-shaped fibreglass pool in Australia?

Not as a one-off outline. A fibreglass pool shell is moulded from an existing mould, so a custom fibreglass pool in Australia means choosing a model and then specifying everything around it. The US spelling "custom fiberglass pools" describes the same product. MFP Easy's range is 40 shell models across 5 size categories, and an outline outside that range is a concrete pool.

Can you add a spa or a beach entry to a fibreglass pool?

Spa jets can be added to any model; a built-in spa comes with the model. A built-in spa and a beach entry ledge are both moulded into the shell, so each one comes with the model you choose and cannot be added to a model without it. MFP Easy's Resort range shells are moulded with a built-in spa, so a buyer who wants one chooses a Resort model. Spa jets are different: they are one of the option families priced per order, quoted as their own line.

Can you choose the colour of a fibreglass pool?

Yes. The gelcoat colour is a per-order decision, chosen from the colour range. The gelcoat is the coloured surface layer of the shell. Waterline tile, coping and paving are chosen separately from the gelcoat colour and priced as their own lines.

Are custom fibreglass pools more expensive than standard fibreglass pools?

There is no separate custom product to price. Every fibreglass pool MFP Easy installs is specified the same way: a model from the range, a gelcoat colour, surrounds, fencing and an equipment package. Installed prices in Brisbane run from about $46,000 to about $109,000 depending on size and options, and a quote moves inside that band on the options chosen and on the conditions of the block.
