Calcium scale on a fibreglass pool: how to tell carbonate from silicate, remove it without damaging the gelcoat, and the water balance that stops it.

Calcium scale on a fibreglass pool is a hard white deposit, and it arrives as one of two minerals that are removed in completely different ways. Calcium carbonate is white and flaky and comes off fairly easily. Calcium silicate is white-grey, harder and much more stubborn. A drop of diluted acid on a rag separates them: calcium carbonate reacts and foams, calcium silicate does not react at all.

Which deposit it is decides the removal method, and on a fibreglass pool the surface limits what can be used. The swimming surface of a fibreglass shell is a gelcoat finish, and the abrasive tools that shift calcium off tile and concrete scratch it. Calcium carbonate has a chemical answer an owner can run with the pool full. Hardened calcium silicate on gelcoat is a job for a pool professional. A fibreglass pool is not drained to treat calcium scale.

What is the hard white build-up on a fibreglass pool?

The hard white build-up on a fibreglass pool is calcium in one of two forms, and a third white problem that is not a deposit at all looks much the same on the wall. The two calcium deposits are calcium carbonate, white and flaky and loose enough to come off fairly easily once the right product is on it, and calcium silicate, white-grey, considerably harder, and much more stubborn to shift. The third is gelcoat chalking, a dull white appearance in the surface itself rather than a mineral layer sitting on top of it, so there is nothing there to lift off and a scale remover has nothing to work on.

An acid drop test tells all three apart. Diluted acid on a rag, held against a small patch of the white area, makes calcium carbonate react and foam. Calcium silicate does not react. Chalking does not react either. The acid is a diagnostic and nothing more: it goes onto a rag for a test patch, never onto the gelcoat as a cleaning treatment.

A coloured or metallic mark is not calcium. It is one of the fibreglass pool stains left by metals or organic matter, and it is lifted with a different chemistry from the one that dissolves calcium.

Calcium silicate takes far longer to form than calcium carbonate. A fibreglass pool showing calcium silicate on its walls usually has scale in the pipework as well, where nobody can see it.

Why does calcium scale form on a fibreglass pool?

Calcium scale forms when the water holds more dissolved calcium than it can keep in solution, and the excess comes out onto the first surface it meets. Four conditions push a fibreglass pool's water past that point: calcium hardness, pH, evaporation and heat.

  • Calcium hardness. Calcium hardness is the measure of dissolved calcium already in the water. Above 600 ppm, calcium settles on the walls and floor. Hard mains water and bore water start a pool high before any chemical goes in. Bore water brings dissolved metals in with it, which is a separate problem with a separate treatment. A sequestrant binds metals so they stay in solution and the filter takes them out, and it is the standing prevention on a bore-water fill.
  • pH. pH has a larger effect on scaling than the calcium reading itself. Above pH 7.8, calcium plates out of the water and onto the gelcoat. Holding pH in the 7.2 to 7.6 operating band keeps it dissolved.
  • Evaporation. Evaporation takes water out of the pool and leaves the dissolved calcium behind in what remains, depositing it as a white band at the waterline. A pool cover cuts evaporation, and less evaporation means less calcium concentrated at the waterline.
  • Heat. Heat drives evaporation, so a heated pool and a run of hot days both concentrate the water faster than an unheated pool in mild weather does.

Calcium-based granular chlorine, sold as cal-hypo, is chlorine blended with calcium, so sanitising with it pushes the calcium hardness reading up as a side effect of chlorinating. It moves quickly enough that a pool run on cal-hypo needs its calcium hardness tested rather than assumed. Too much calcium chloride dosing is the other route to a reading above 600 ppm.

A salt water fibreglass pool carries one extra push in the same direction. Salt chlorination drives a pool's pH upward, and holding it in band means regular acid dosing. Where that dosing slips, the scale shows up as flaky white mineral build-up on the chlorinator cell plates.

A calcium deposit compounds once it starts. It traps dirt, algae and debris as it grows, so the white mark becomes a cleaning problem as well as a cosmetic one.

Pool volume decides how far a week of evaporation moves the calcium hardness reading, because the same evaporation concentrates the same dissolved calcium into less water in a smaller shell. The smallest shell in our range holds 3,800 litres and the largest holds 52,780 litres, so one week of January heat moves the calcium hardness reading much further in the smallest than in the largest.

What calcium hardness should a fibreglass pool run at?

SPASA Australia's published guidance for residential and commercial pools puts calcium hardness at 200 to 400 mg/L, the same reading written as 200 to 400 ppm.

Published ranges differ between sources by more than rounding. The number that governs an individual pool is the one in that shell manufacturer's own care document, so the care document supplied with the pool outranks any range published elsewhere.

The Better Health Channel, run by the Victorian Department of Health, describes what goes wrong at each end without publishing a range at all: "Low calcium levels will deteriorate pool surfaces, while high calcium levels will leave a 'scum' or scale on surfaces and equipment."

Above pH 7.6, chlorine loses effectiveness, scaling risk rises, the water goes cloudy and a heater works harder. The operating band to hold runs 7.2 to 7.6, and calcium plates onto the gelcoat above pH 7.8. Calcium hardness is one reading among several that have to sit in band together, and the fibreglass pool chemicals that set pH, total alkalinity and sanitiser level are the same ones that decide whether calcium stays dissolved.

Calcium hardness is not on every home test strip, so that reading usually comes from a pool shop water test rather than from the kit beside the pump. Where a reading sits high enough that balancing alone will not bring it back, the next call is to your pool builder or a pool professional.

How do you remove calcium from a fibreglass pool safely?

Which removal method applies depends on what the drop test found, and on a fibreglass pool the choice is settled by what the gelcoat will tolerate rather than by what shifts the deposit fastest.

Calcium carbonate comes off with a stain eraser, a scale remover or a fibreglass-safe scaling treatment. The treatments dosed into the water work slowly by design: they dissolve the deposit over several weeks, not in a single treatment. Bring pH back into the 7.2 to 7.6 band over the same period, because above pH 7.8 calcium keeps plating onto the gelcoat while the treatment is still dissolving what is already there.

Calcium silicate on a gelcoat shell is professional territory, and there is no honest do-it-yourself version. The mechanical method that reliably shifts hardened silicate is a pumice stone and hard work, and a pumice stone is for hard surfaces only, meaning tile and concrete. On gelcoat it scratches. That rules the fast method out and leaves the chemical route, which works on silicate more slowly again than it does on carbonate.

The carbonate treatment is carried out with the pool full. A fibreglass pool is not drained to treat calcium scale, at any depth and for any deposit. Where a deposit is beyond what a dosed treatment will shift, the job goes to a pool professional.

Read the label before anything goes into the water. Some professional-strength descalers are rated for above-waterline use only and must not be poured into the pool.

Which scale removers and descalers are safe on gelcoat?

A fibreglass pool's gelcoat rules out most of the standard scale-removal kit. Anything that works by abrasion scratches the gelcoat while it shifts the deposit. Anything that works by acid attack on the surface itself does a different kind of damage: Okeanos Pools reports acid washing can erode the finish and leave permanent marks.

Okeanos Pools states the surface risk directly: "Harsh chemicals, granular chlorine, or acid washing can erode the blue finish and leave permanent marks." Their recommended alternative is a calcium-dissolving compound applied to the deposit, which is the same chemical route that carbonate scale responds to.

We will not name a household calcium, lime and rust remover as gelcoat-safe. No manufacturer and no independent source publishes a composition that qualifies a household descaler for use on gelcoat or in pool water, so naming one would be a guess presented as advice. Use a descaler sold specifically for fibreglass pools, or have a pool professional do the removal.

Does baking soda raise calcium hardness?

No. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, an alkalinity product: it raises total alkalinity and leaves the calcium hardness reading where it was. Calcium hardness is raised by calcium-based products, including calcium chloride and calcium-based granular chlorine. Dissolve baking soda in a bucket of water before it goes in, because undissolved powder sprinkled onto the water can bond a stubborn white film to the surface.

Does WD-40 remove calcium deposits?

Not on a fibreglass pool. WD-40 is a household product rather than a pool descaler, and no manufacturer or independent source publishes a composition that qualifies it for use on gelcoat or in pool water. Calcium carbonate comes off with a stain eraser, a scale remover or a scaling treatment made for fibreglass pools. Hardened calcium silicate goes to a pool professional.

Can you remove calcium build-up while the pool is full?

Yes, and on a fibreglass pool that is the only way it is done. The scaling treatments that are safe on gelcoat are dosed into the water and dissolve the deposit over several weeks. A fibreglass pool is not drained to treat calcium scale, at any depth, because the water is what holds the shell in the ground, and emptying a fibreglass pool is a structural decision that belongs to the builder, never a cleaning step. Does a salt water fibreglass pool get more calcium scale?

Not from the salt itself. Salt chlorination drives a pool's pH upward, and pH above 7.8 is what plates calcium onto the gelcoat, so a salt water fibreglass pool scales when that drift is not held back with regular acid dosing.
