The chemicals a fibreglass pool needs, the levels to hold pH, chlorine, alkalinity and stabiliser at, and what is safe to put in a gelcoat shell.

Fibreglass pool chemicals come down to five products: a sanitiser, a pH adjuster, an alkalinity buffer, a stabiliser and a stain-and-scale control product. The sanitiser is chlorine, bought as liquid or granular chlorine, dosed as stabilised tablets, or generated on site from dissolved salt. Hold pH at 7.2–7.6, free chlorine at 1–3 ppm, total alkalinity at 80–120 ppm and stabiliser at 30–50 ppm. Calcium hardness is a reading to watch rather than something you add. Two rules protect the interior: nothing undissolved is left sitting against the gelcoat, and no concentrated chemical is poured straight onto it. The interior is a smooth, non-porous gelcoat, so the standing routine is water balance and filtration rather than surface upkeep, and algae cannot anchor into it the way it does into porous concrete. What chemicals does a fibreglass pool need?

A fibreglass pool runs on a sanitiser, a pH adjuster, an alkalinity buffer, a stabiliser and a stain-and-scale control product. Every one of them goes into the water rather than onto the surface, because the interior is a non-porous gelcoat that gives algae and dirt far less grip than a porous plaster or concrete finish. A fibreglass pool is lower-maintenance than a concrete pool, not maintenance-free.

  • Sanitiser. Chlorine kills bacteria and algae in the water. It is bought as liquid chlorine or granular chlorine, dosed as stabilised tablets in a dispenser, or generated on site by a salt chlorine generator.
  • pH adjuster. pH decides whether the water etches the gelcoat and the pool equipment or deposits calcium onto them, so the adjuster used is the one that moves the reading in whichever direction the test says.
  • Alkalinity buffer. Sodium bicarbonate raises total alkalinity, and total alkalinity is what buffers pH. A pool with alkalinity in band holds its pH between corrections. A pool with alkalinity below band swings on pH, and swinging pH damages the gelcoat.
  • Stabiliser (cyanuric acid). Cyanuric acid shields free chlorine from ultraviolet light. Without it the sun strips the chlorine out of the water and algae follows.
  • Stain-and-scale control product. Metal staining and calcium deposits both show on a pale gelcoat, and this product goes in on a routine schedule rather than in response to a mark that has already formed.

The sanitiser does not have to be dosed by hand. A salt chlorine generator makes the chlorine on site from dissolved salt, and a mineral system runs magnesium and potassium salts through a cell the same way, which is what makes looking after a magnesium pool a different set of readings from a hand-dosed chlorine pool. Both suit a gelcoat shell, and both are still sanitising the water with chlorine.

Calcium hardness is the reading that is not on that shopping list. A gelcoat shell needs no calcium of its own, so calcium hardness is measured and not normally dosed for. It climbs on its own through calcium-based granular chlorine and through calcium chloride dosing, and calcium that climbs far enough settles out onto the walls and floor.

What levels should a fibreglass pool be held at?

A fibreglass pool is held at pH 7.2–7.6, with free chlorine at 1–3 ppm, total alkalinity at 80–120 ppm and stabiliser at 30–50 ppm. Calcium hardness carries no published target here: it is a reading to watch against its consequences.

pH 7.2–7.6 Below about 7.0 the water is acidic enough to etch and corrode the gelcoat, the pool equipment and the PVC pipework, and sanitiser is consumed faster. Most equipment warranties exclude low-pH damage. Above about 7.6 chlorine loses effectiveness, scaling risk rises, the water clouds and a heater works harder. Above 7.8 calcium plates out onto the surface.
Free chlorine 1–3 ppm Free chlorine is the sanitiser available in the water to kill bacteria and algae. Below the band the water is under-sanitised and algae takes hold. Very high free chlorine can oxidise or bleach the gelcoat permanently.
Total alkalinity 80–120 ppm Total alkalinity is what buffers pH. Below the band pH swings between doses, and swinging pH damages the gelcoat. Above the band the water clouds.
Stabiliser (cyanuric acid) 30–50 ppm Stabiliser shields chlorine from ultraviolet light. Without it the sun strips the chlorine out of the water and algae follows.
Calcium hardness No target published here Above 600 ppm calcium settles on the walls and floor as calcium scale on a gelcoat surface. Calcium-based granular chlorine (cal-hypo) dosing and excessive calcium chloride dosing are the two routes to a reading above 600 ppm. The figure to hold is the one your shell's care document specifies, and home test kits generally cannot read calcium hardness, so that sample goes in to a pool shop.
Salt (salt-chlorinated pools only) The salt level the chlorinator manufacturer specifies The cell converts dissolved salt into chlorine every time the pump runs, so the salt level is what the sanitiser is made from. Too high a salt level shuts the chlorinator down.

Test the water at least once a week with a home test kit or test strips, and again after heavy rain, heavy use or a large water addition. Storm rain drops enough water into an open pool to move pH and dilute the sanitiser, which is why we tell owners to test after a storm rather than only on a fixed weekly day. Run a fuller test monthly, covering pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabiliser.

How do you raise or lower pH and alkalinity in a fibreglass pool?

Four products move pH and alkalinity in a fibreglass pool: sodium bicarbonate raises total alkalinity, soda ash (sodium carbonate) raises pH, and either dry acid (sodium bisulphate) or hydrochloric acid lowers pH.

Total alkalinity is brought into band before pH is chased, because total alkalinity is what buffers pH. Correcting pH in a pool whose alkalinity sits outside 80–120 ppm leaves the buffer that holds pH still out of band.

To raise total alkalinity and pH. Dissolve sodium bicarbonate in a bucket of pool water, disperse it around the pool with the pump running, and retest before dosing again. Once alkalinity holds, soda ash raises pH. Soda ash also clouds the water while it disperses, so a pool that goes hazy after a pH correction is showing the dose still in suspension.

To lower pH. Dry acid or hydrochloric acid brings pH down. Dry acid is dissolved in a bucket of pool water first. Hydrochloric acid is diluted and poured into the moving water with the pump running, away from the walls and floor.

Every powdered additive goes into a fibreglass pool dissolved. Sodium bicarbonate or alkalinity increaser sprinkled straight into the pool can bond a stubborn white film onto the gelcoat, and that film then has to be taken off the surface. Dissolve the product in a bucket of pool water, disperse it around the pool, and leave the pump running so the filtration carries it through the whole body of water.

The dose itself comes off the product's own label, worked against the water volume published for the pool model.

Is muriatic acid safe to use in a fibreglass pool?

Hydrochloric acid, sold as muriatic acid, is used in a fibreglass pool to bring pH down, and it is safe on two conditions: it goes in diluted and dispersed through the water, never poured onto or against the shell, and it is never used to wash the surface.

Acid washing is a concrete-pool method. A concrete pool carries a sacrificial render layer, and an acid wash takes a thin skin off that layer. A fibreglass pool has a gelcoat instead, and the acid cuts into and weakens the remaining gelcoat, thinning the one coloured, waterproof layer the shell has. That is why acid washing is not a maintenance step on a fibreglass pool, and acid does not remove chalking either. Cleaning a fibreglass pool without damaging the gelcoat is a soft, non-abrasive job on a surface that is already non-porous, which is a different task from stripping a concrete render.

Contact between an undiluted chemical and the gelcoat is what does the damage, not the chemical existing in the water. Hydrochloric acid diluted into a moving body of water is holding pH in band. Hydrochloric acid poured neat down a wall is a chemical burn on the surface it lands on.

What is the best chlorine to use in a fibreglass pool?

Every chlorine form sanitises a fibreglass pool, so the choice comes down to what each form puts into the water alongside the chlorine, and to how it is dosed.

Undissolved chlorine in contact with gelcoat is the reliably damaging case. Chlorine dispersed through the water and held at 1–3 ppm free chlorine sanitises the pool without ever sitting on the gelcoat as a solid. Very high free chlorine can oxidise or bleach the gelcoat permanently, and a strong chlorine smell usually means chloramines rather than too much free chlorine.

A salt water pool is still a chlorine pool: the cell converts dissolved salt into chlorine by electrolysis every time the pump runs, and that chlorine, as hypochlorous acid, is what kills the bacteria and algae. Salt water, magnesium and chlorine pools compared differ in how the chlorine reaches the water, not in whether a gelcoat shell suits them.

Can you shock a fibreglass pool, and with what?

Yes. Shocking a fibreglass pool means dosing a large slug of chlorine to burn off contaminants: algae, bacteria and organic matter. The triggers are heavy use, murky water, or a free chlorine reading that has dropped, and shocking is done at least monthly, more often when the pool is heavily used.

The product is chlorine shock, and the dosing method is what protects the gelcoat. Granular shock is dissolved in a bucket of pool water and then dispersed around the pool with the pump running, because undissolved granules resting on the floor are the case that bleaches and blisters gelcoat.

Algae in a fibreglass pool is usually handled with a standard chlorine shock and correct water balance, and it typically clears within 24 hours. Run the filtration for at least 24 hours after the dose. That run is what circulates the treatment through the whole body of water and pulls the dead algae out through the filter.

Why is the water in a fibreglass pool cloudy, and how do you clear it?

Cloudy water in a fibreglass pool comes from the water chemistry or from the filtration, and a water test read against the filtration run time separates them.

  • pH above band, with calcium coming out of solution. High pH raises the scaling risk, and calcium leaving solution hazes the water on its way to the surface.
  • Total alkalinity above 120 ppm. Total alkalinity above band clouds the water on its own, wherever pH sits.
  • A recent soda ash dose. Soda ash raises pH and clouds the water while it disperses, so haze that follows a pH correction is the dose still in suspension.
  • Fine particles the filter has not taken out. Suspended material too fine to settle stays in the water column until the filtration removes it, and a pump running too few hours a day never gets through the whole body of water.

Work through it in that order. Test first, and bring total alkalinity back to 80–120 ppm and pH back to 7.2–7.6 before anything else is added. Then run the filtration, which is what carries the corrected water through the whole pool and takes the suspended material out. Only after that does the filter itself come into question. A cloud that followed a soda ash dose is left to clear on circulation rather than treated as a new fault.

A pale gelcoat interior shows cloudiness earlier than a dark one, so owners of light-coloured shells usually notice it first.

Should you use copper-based algaecide in a fibreglass pool?

No. Copper-based algaecide is the product to keep out of a fibreglass pool, because copper is the metal that leaves permanent blue-green staining on a pale gelcoat.

Copper reaches pool water from three places: a copper-based algaecide dosed in deliberately, copper corroding out of the house pipework, and a corroding heat exchanger inside a heater. All three put dissolved copper into the water, and all three mark a gelcoat shell the same blue-green.

A copper algaecide adds copper to the water; a chlorine shock does not. The first move on algae in a fibreglass pool is a standard chlorine shock with the water balance corrected, and where an algaecide is used on top of that it should be a copper-free one.

Fibreglass pool stains are identified by their source before anything is dosed at them, because metal staining and organic staining are removed by different methods.

How do you balance a brand new fibreglass pool at handover?

Balance a brand new fibreglass pool in a fixed order, because each addition sets up the next one. Total alkalinity is what buffers pH, so a pool whose pH is set before its alkalinity has its pH set twice.

  1. Test the fill water. Fill water is not neutral. The first test is of the source water, before anything is added, and it tells you which direction every later addition has to move.
  2. Set total alkalinity. Total alkalinity to 80–120 ppm comes first, so the buffer is in place before pH is touched.
  3. Set pH. With alkalinity holding, pH is brought to 7.2–7.6, and it stays there between doses.
  4. Add stabiliser. Stabiliser to 30–50 ppm goes in before the pool is sanitised, so the Queensland sun does not strip the chlorine straight back out of a freshly dosed pool.
  5. Bring the sanitiser up. Free chlorine goes to 1–3 ppm in water that is already buffered, balanced and protected from ultraviolet light. On a salt pool, the salt goes in to the level the chlorinator manufacturer specifies and the chlorinator is started, and the cell makes the chlorine from there.
  6. Run the filtration and retest before anyone swims. Circulation carries every addition through the whole body of water, and the readings are confirmed on that mixed water.

FAQs

Do fibreglass pools use less chemicals than concrete pools?

Yes. A fibreglass pool holds its water with less sanitiser and less scrubbing than a concrete pool, because algae cannot anchor into a non-porous gelcoat the way it does into a porous concrete interior. That porosity is what drives a concrete pool's chemical demand and its brushing. The shopping list is still the same five products, and the readings still have to be held in band.

How often should you test the water in a fibreglass pool?

Weekly is the baseline, with an extra test after heavy rain, heavy use or a large top-up, because each of those changes the water faster than evaporation does. Once a month, run the fuller test that covers pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabiliser. The weekly check is a home kit or strips at the pool edge; the monthly one picks up the readings that drift slowly.

Can too much chlorine damage a fibreglass pool?

Very high free chlorine can oxidise or bleach a gelcoat surface permanently, and undissolved tablets or granules resting against the shell bleach and blister it. Australian Standard AS 1838:2021 requires a fibreglass pool's gelcoat to withstand more than 100 times normal chlorine level for 24 hours without colour loss. Swimmers feel an over-chlorinated pool first: it irritates skin, eyes and lungs and aggravates asthma, psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema.

How often does a fibreglass pool need to be cleaned?

Skim the surface and brush the walls and waterline lightly as the leaf and debris load in the yard demands, and lift settled debris when it appears. Cleaning cadence, vacuuming, filtration run times and equipment servicing belong to the fibreglass pool maintenance routine. Water chemistry is the separate job: what goes into the water, and at what levels.

What is the best pool cleaner for a fibreglass pool?

A cleaner suited to a smooth, non-porous surface. A gelcoat interior gives dirt and algae far less grip than porous concrete, so the work is lifting settled debris rather than scrubbing a surface, and a soft brush handles the waterline between runs. Anything abrasive is kept off the gelcoat, because the coloured, waterproof layer is only as thick as it was moulded.
