What is the stain on your fibreglass pool?

The mark on a fibreglass pool is identified by three things: its colour, where it sits on the shell, and how it responds to two spot tests. Colour narrows the cause to a family. An iron mark reads orange, brown, tan or reddish-brown. A copper mark reads green or blue, and goes blue-green-black on pools filled from a bore or a dam. Manganese reads brown, black or purple. A greenish-brown mark is organic, not metal, and a reddish-blue one came from berries.

Two tests then separate organic from metal. Rub a plain uncoated vitamin C tablet on the mark: if the mark noticeably lightens, metal is the leading suspect, because ascorbic acid reacts with metal and lifts it off the gelcoat. Brush the mark and check it against chlorine: if it softens with brushing and responds to chlorine, it is organic. Fibreglass pool stains appear even when the water is clear and balanced, so a clean set of test-kit readings neither rules a stain out nor points at its cause. Identification comes first because organic and metal stains answer to different chemistry.

What causes the brown stains on a fibreglass pool?

Brown stains on a fibreglass pool have two common causes that need opposite treatments: tannins from decomposing leaves, and iron carried in with the water.

Leaves, berries and other plant matter that sit on the surface release tannins as they decompose, and the tannins adhere to the gelcoat. The mark that results takes the shape of the debris that made it, so an organic stain shows as brown or greenish-brown shadows on the floor, on the steps and in the corners where leaves collect. Clearing the leaves out does not clear the mark, because the tannin has already adhered to the surface.

Iron arrives dissolved in the water and drops onto the gelcoat when the water goes out of balance. An iron stain reads orange, brown, tan or reddish-brown, and it is not shaped by debris, because nothing sat there to shape it. Bore and dam water carries iron, copper and manganese into the pool at every fill and top-up. Town water is treated for manganese but is not stripped of it, and manganese reads brown, black or purple, so a brown mark is not automatically iron either.

The two brown cases are separated by the same pair of tests that sorts every other mark. Chlorine and a soft brush soften a tannin stain and do little to iron.

How do you get rust and other metal stains off a fibreglass pool?

Rust stains and other metal stains come off a fibreglass pool with an ascorbic acid treatment carried out with the pool full, followed by a sequestrant that holds the released metal in solution so it cannot settle back onto the gelcoat.

Metal usually arrives in the fill water rather than out of the shell itself. Water drawn from a bore or a dam brings iron, copper and manganese with it. Town water is treated for manganese without being stripped of it. Corroding fittings, screws and rust flakes washing off nearby metalwork put iron in directly. Corroded copper drinking-water pipes put copper in when the pool is topped up with a garden hose. Ascorbic acid is dosed per litre of pool water, and every product label is written per volume, so the dose on the packet is unusable until you know how much water your pool holds.

  1. Take free chlorine to zero and pH to about 7.2. Both settings go in before any acid is dosed.
  2. Dose the ascorbic acid to the product label, sized to your pool's litres. Published ascorbic acid doses disagree by a factor of two to five between vendors and between imperial and metric conversions, so the label on the product in your hand is the only dose to work from.
  3. Circulate for 24 hours. The filtration system runs through the full 24 hours after dosing.
  4. Rebalance the water. Bring pH back to 7.2 to 7.6 and free chlorine back to 1.5 to 3.0 ppm.
  5. Add a sequestrant. A sequestrant binds the metal particles so they stay in solution and leave through the filter. Without it, the metal that has just come off the gelcoat drops straight back onto it.

How do you remove organic, leaf and algae stains from a fibreglass pool?

Organic stains, leaf stains and algae marks come off a fibreglass pool with chlorine and a soft brush, with the pool full.

An organic mark is shaped like the debris that made it, because the tannins released by decomposing leaves and berries adhere to the gelcoat directly beneath them. A mark with the outline of a leaf pile or a scatter of fallen fruit is organic whatever colour it has gone, and that outline identifies it before any test is run.

  1. Clear the debris first. Skim and vacuum the leaves and fruit out, because chlorine dosed into a pool full of decomposing matter is spent on the debris rather than on the mark.
  2. Raise the chlorine overnight. Pool shops and product vendors describe roughly double the normal daily chlorine dose for a stubborn organic stain, applied after dark so daylight UV does not burn the chlorine off before it has worked.
  3. Brush the mark down with a soft brush. Brushing puts the chlorinated water into contact with the tannin. A soft brush is the correct tool on gelcoat.

Many organic marks keep fading for weeks after the treatment rather than disappearing overnight, so judge the result over a few weeks before repeating the dose.

One rule matters more than the method: never hold granular chlorine directly against the surface to spot-treat a mark. Concentrated chlorine sitting on gelcoat is how owners bleach a pale patch into a coloured shell, and a bleached patch is a permanent colour loss rather than a stain that can be lifted.

What are the white marks and salt stains on a fibreglass pool?

White stains on a fibreglass pool are one of three different problems, and each has its own test and its own answer: calcium scale, dried salt residue, or gelcoat chalking.

Calcium scale is a hard, crusty white build-up that forms at and above the waterline, and it comes off with acid rather than with any stain treatment. Diluted acid on a rag dissolves carbonate scale and it wipes off quickly.

Salt residue is a dry white powder that sits above the waterline on a salt-chlorinated pool. It is powder rather than crust, and fresh water alone removes it. Neither of the other two white marks rinses away with a hose.

Gelcoat chalking is dull, powdery and rough, it comes off on your hand when you wipe it, and it does not react to acid at all. Fibreglass pool chalking is the gelcoat surface breaking down, not a deposit sitting on top of the gelcoat.

The acid-on-a-rag test is what separates the two that look most alike. Wipe diluted acid over the white mark: if it dissolves and wipes away, it is calcium carbonate scale and a descaling job. If nothing happens at all, it is chalking, and no acid, no chlorine and no stain remover will bring it back, because the surface itself has degraded.

How do you get stains off fibreglass pool steps?

Stains come off fibreglass pool steps with the same chemistry used on the walls and floor, applied by hand with the pool full.

Steps, benches and swim-outs are horizontal surfaces within arm's reach of the pool edge, so debris settles on them and stays put. The marks that form are the same two families: organic marks from leaves, fruit and plant matter, and metal marks from iron, copper and manganese.

Treating a step uses the same chemistry applied by hand. Hold a plain uncoated vitamin C tablet against a metal spot on a tread and watch whether the mark lightens. Work an organic mark with a soft brush or a soft pad on a pole while the chlorine is raised. A step is reachable from the pool edge with a pole, so nobody needs to lower the water to get at it, and no stain on a step justifies draining a fibreglass shell.

One pattern is worth knowing on an older pool: the edges of steps and benches chalk less than the flatter surfaces around them, so a dull white patch on a tread may be chalked gelcoat rather than a stain, and the acid-on-a-rag test tells you which.

What stain remover is safe on a fibreglass pool?

The stain removers safe on a fibreglass pool are the chemical ones: acid-blend powders for metal marks, sequestrants for prevention, and chlorine for organic marks. Wire brushes, steel wool and scouring pads are what damages the surface, because they cut into the gelcoat. Four classes of product are used on a fibreglass pool.

  • Acid-blend stain-remover powders. Ascorbic acid, and oxalic and citric acid blends, treat metal stains by reacting with the metal and lifting it off the gelcoat. Products of this class are sold through pool shops and hardware chains in Australia and are labelled as suitable for fibreglass surfaces. They do little for an organic mark, which responds strongest to chlorine.
  • Sequestrants and stain-and-scale liquids. A sequestrant binds dissolved metal so it stays in solution and leaves through the filter instead of settling out on the surface. It prevents metal staining rather than removing it, and it is the standing dose on bore-water fills and after any metal treatment.
  • Melamine eraser pads. The trade is split on these. Some sources recommend an eraser pad with elbow grease for a stubborn mark; others put an eraser pad in the same category as steel wool and a wire brush, tools that can scratch a fibreglass surface.
  • Chlorine. Organic stains are the family chlorine treats: raised chlorine plus brushing lifts tannin marks, and does little to iron, copper or manganese.

A separate product covers a separate problem: sodium metabisulphite is sold in Australia for the osmotic black spots.

An Australian stain-removal specialist prices its treatment kits at $245 to $345, GST and delivery included, tiered across three volume bands: the first band stops at 40,000 litres, the second at 65,000 litres, and the third takes every pool above that. A second, independent operator puts professional treatment of minor stains at "starting from a few hundred dollars".

The gelcoat a wire brush, steel wool or a scouring pad cuts into is a thin layer, put at less than half the thickness of a credit card, and it is the shell's primary barrier against water intrusion, algae and chemical attack. A scratch that reaches through it is irreversible damage rather than a cosmetic mark, which is why abrasive cleaners belong on the same list as steel wool and a wire brush.

Why has the colour faded on a fibreglass pool, and is that a stain at all?

Faded colour on a fibreglass pool is not a stain. Fading and chalking are the gelcoat itself weathering, which is why no stain remover shifts them.

Three surface states are worth telling apart by feel as much as by sight:

  • A stain sits on top of the gelcoat and feels rough or gritty under your hand, and the colour is in the deposit rather than in the surface.
  • A faded or bleached gelcoat still feels smooth under your hand, and its colour loss is permanent, because nothing has been added to the surface and nothing has broken down on it.
  • A chalked gelcoat is dull, powdery and rough, because the resin at the surface is breaking down and coming away as powder.

UV exposure, chlorine held high, and water left out of balance all drive the gelcoat weathering behind fibreglass pool discolouration, and it runs faster on a pool that sits in full sun all day than on one shaded for part of it.

Fade is judged against the pool's own original colour and finish, not against another pool. Fibreglass shells are supplied in a range of gelcoat colours and finishes, and a dark interior that has lightened by a shade is a different report from a pale interior that has gone chalky, even though both get called fading.

Can a faded or chalky fibreglass pool be brought back?

A faded or chalky fibreglass pool can be improved, but no treatment returns a bleached gelcoat to the colour it left the mould with. Three levels of work are used on a weathered gelcoat.

  1. Polish and buff. A lightly chalked surface can be cut back and polished to recover gloss.
  2. Professional gelcoat restoration. A restorer works the surface back and applies a new coating over it. The method described for a chalked gelcoat is an acid wash followed by buffing, and that is a drained-pool job.
  3. Resurfacing the shell. The whole interior surface is renewed, which is the answer for a shell whose gelcoat has degraded past restoration.

The trade does not agree on how far a chalked gelcoat can be recovered, and the disagreement is worth knowing before you pay anyone. One position is that acid washing followed by buffing and a new coating brings the surface back, with two concessions attached: the acid weakens whatever gelcoat is left, and a coating will not bond to a badly degraded surface. A second position is that chalking cannot be cleaned off at all, and that physically refurbishing the surface is the only route. A third is that acid washing changes nothing lasting on fibreglass, and that sanding a gelcoat costs the surface some of the life it had left.

Two things none of the three levels will fix: a permanently bleached gelcoat does not come back to its original colour at any of them, and polishing does nothing to calcium carbonate scale, which needs acid to dissolve.

The methods at levels two and three are done with the pool empty, which is the reason to be certain of the diagnosis first. A fibreglass shell is not left empty casually. Emptying a fibreglass pool is a job planned in its own right, on its own structural grounds, and it is never a step taken to chase a stain. Where the gelcoat is past restoring, a new shell starts fresh rather than repaired.

How do you stop a fibreglass pool staining again?

Preventing fibreglass pool stains is four habits, and each one is aimed at a specific stain type.

  • Hold the water chemistry in band. Pool water chemistry kept in range prevents metal stains and mineral scale, because water out of balance is what makes dissolved metals and minerals drop out of solution and onto the gelcoat. pH, total alkalinity and sanitiser are the three readings that matter.
  • Dose a sequestrant on bore-water fills and after any metal treatment, and filter the hose. A sequestrant keeps iron, copper and manganese in solution so they leave through the filter instead of staining the surface. A hose filter stops the metal arriving in the first place.
  • Keep metal objects and corroding fittings out of the pool. Rust flakes, screws, corroding fittings and metal furniture beside the water are direct sources of iron staining.
  • Clear leaves and fruit before they decompose. Tannins are released as plant matter breaks down on the surface, so debris removed while it is still whole never becomes an organic stain.

Skimming, brushing and vacuuming are routine pool cleaning tasks, and a fibreglass pool maintenance routine sets the frequency for them and for the water testing.
