How lights work in a fibreglass pool: where the niche sits, choosing an LED, what a licensed electrician must do, and replacing one without draining.

Owners ask about fibreglass pool lights late, usually after the shape and colour of the pool are locked. Lighting is one of the cheapest things to get right while the plan is still on paper. Our shells run from a 3.00 m plunge pool to an 11.48 m lap pool, which is why lighting is never one answer.
Can a fibreglass pool have lights?
Yes. A fibreglass pool is lit by one or more low-voltage LED lights set into the shell wall below the waterline. The fitting sits flush with the gelcoat and faces along the length of the pool. A one-piece fibreglass shell arrives at the site already moulded. The wall the light passes through is a single laminate skin, not a poured concrete wall, and the fitting sits in a niche formed in that skin. Some shells are supplied with the light niche formed as part of the moulding, and on other installations the niche is made in the shell wall on site. Both practices are used in the Australian market. Under AS/NZS 3000, the Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules, the light is supplied at extra-low voltage from a source outside the pool zone, in practice an isolation transformer. WorkSafe Queensland treats installing that wiring as licensed electrical work rather than owner maintenance.
Where a light goes changes with the shell it goes into. The Sovereign is 5.00 m long and 2.70 m wide, graded from 1.00 m in the shallow end to 1.63 m at the deep end. The Saint Azur is 11.48 m long and 4.45 m wide, with a 1.96 m deep end. A swimmer at its shallow end is a long way from the deep-end wall. Our swimming pools and plunge pools run from 3.00 m to 11.48 m long. Deep-end depth runs from 1.45 m to 2.00 m across those shells, setting the two spa models aside. Water volumes run from 6,275 L to 52,780 L, so the body of water one fitting has to light is a different size in every case.
How many lights does a fibreglass pool need and where do they go?
The number of lights a fibreglass pool needs is set by the length of the shell and by what the pool is lit for. Light count on a fibreglass pool is decided before the pool is built, as a design decision made with your builder rather than a fixed rule. The fitting, the conduit route and the transformer position sit inside the same electrical scope as the pump.
A 4.50 m Verona, a 7.50 m Bedarra and an 11.00 m Kensington are three different lighting problems. A light positioned in the deep-end wall throws along the length of the shell. The Verona is 4.50 m long and 2.50 m wide with a 1.50 m deep end, so one fitting reaches the far wall. The Bedarra is 7.50 m long and 3.80 m wide. The Kensington is 11.00 m long, 4.00 m wide and 2.00 m deep at the deep end. One light throwing down a shell that long does not reach the far end, and the shallow half stays darker than the deep half.

Which LED pool light should you choose for a fibreglass pool?
Choosing a light for a fibreglass pool is two decisions: a single-colour white LED or a colour-change LED, and then a light switched at the power or a light driven by a controller. The three types differ in what the light does once it is on and in what has to be wired to make that happen.

How a fibreglass pool light reads in the water is set by the gelcoat colour of the shell as much as by the fitting. Our pool colour range runs from pale interiors to dark ones, and the same white LED reads differently in a dark interior than it does in a pale one.
A colour-change light can also be driven from a pool automation controller, alongside the pump and the heater. That puts the light on the same control as the rest of the equipment area rather than on its own switch.
How is a pool light installed in a fibreglass pool?
Installing a pool light is licensed electrical work in Queensland. The fitting, the cable run and the transformer are an electrician's job from the start. WorkSafe Queensland requires an unrestricted electrical contractor licence to install pool or spa lighting and its wiring during construction of a pool or spa. That licensed scope includes connecting the lighting cables to the supply transformer, testing and energising the circuit. WorkSafe Queensland dates the change to 1 April 2025, when water equipment including pool lights became prescribed electrical equipment under Queensland's Electrical Safety Regulation 2013. That change puts an extra-low-voltage pool light, and a pool pump with it, under the same requirements as the rest of a pool's electrical equipment in Queensland. Queensland's Electrical Safety Office puts the ongoing obligation the same way: a licensed electrician must install and maintain pool wiring and electrical equipment.

A pool light circuit runs at low voltage through a transformer installed outside the pool zone. AS/NZS 3000, the Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules, sets that arrangement at clause 6.3.4.5. A luminaire in the pool itself must be supplied at a nominal output not exceeding 12 V a.c. or 30 V ripple-free d.c. The supply must be SELV (separated extra-low voltage). The source supplying the light is an isolation transformer in practice, sited outside the pool zone, and each light in the pool is fed from its own source. The luminaire in the water is not given a protective earthing conductor. AS/NZS 3000 governs the supply, not who may install it. The requirement for a licensed electrician comes from Queensland electrical safety law.
On a new build the work runs in this order:
- The light position is set at design. The builder and the customer fix how many lights the pool gets and which wall each one sits in.
- Conduit is run from the equipment area to the light position. The electrician sets that route.
- The fitting is sealed where it passes through the shell wall. The penetration through the laminate is sealed so the wall holds water, and that is complete before the pool is filled.
- The cable is terminated at a transformer outside the pool zone. The electrician terminates each light's cable at its supply transformer, mounted clear of the water.
- The circuit is tested and energised by the electrician. Testing and energising sit inside WorkSafe Queensland's licensed scope, and the light becomes usable at that point.
Lighting is priced inside the pool package rather than as a standalone job, so the number that matters is the installed price of the pool with the lights you want in it, which the pricing quiz works out for your shell and your site.
How do you replace a light in a fibreglass pool?
A wet-niche LED is replaced with the pool full. The fitting is released from its niche in the shell wall and drawn up to the coping on its own cable. The electrician works on it there, in the dry, and the water level is not dropped at any stage.
A light that has stopped working is a different problem from a light being replaced. A broken light requires troubleshooting before anything is bought, and the symptom carries the diagnosis: a light that will not turn on, a flicker or strobe, a colour it is stuck on, or water inside the lens each point at a different part. That diagnosis decides whether the fitting, the lamp or the supply is the part being paid for.
What a replacement costs depends on whether the light goes back into a niche the pool already has or into a new position in the shell wall. The two sources are measuring the same job with different assumptions. My Perfect Pool's band is national and wide because it takes in premium fittings. That guide puts an LED fitting at from $150 in generic brands and at $270 to $650 in top brands, with an electrician's installation labour at $100 to $400. The Quote Yard's swap band is tighter, but it covers one state and a budget fitting. Its figures are Western Australian. Both sources agree that a new light position with new cabling costs materially more than a swap into an existing niche, and that a licensed electrician is required either way.
A fibreglass shell and its plumbing outlast the lamp inside the light fitting, so a light is a replaceable part in a pool that stays in the ground. The ongoing care routine of a fibreglass pool divides along the same line: water balance, skimming and keeping the gelcoat surface clean are the owner's jobs, and the light circuit is the electrician's.

Can I replace a pool light without draining the pool?
Yes, where the light is a wet-niche LED. The fitting lifts clear of the shell wall and sits at the coping on the end of its cable, so the job happens above the water with the pool still full. In Queensland the electrical part of that change is licensed work, so an electrician performs the swap.
Do you need an electrician to change a pool light?
Yes, in Queensland.
