Can a fibreglass pool have lights?
Yes. Fibreglass pools can use one or more low-voltage LED lights installed in the shell wall below the waterline. The fitting sits flush with the gelcoat and usually points along the length of the pool.
A one-piece fibreglass shell is moulded before delivery. Unlike a poured concrete wall, the shell wall consists of a single laminate skin. The light fitting sits in a niche in this skin. The niche can be formed during moulding or created in the shell wall during installation. Both methods are used in Australia.
Under AS/NZS 3000, the Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules, the light must receive extra-low voltage from a source outside the pool zone. This source is typically an isolation transformer. WorkSafe Queensland classifies installation of this wiring as licensed electrical work, not owner maintenance.
Light placement depends on the shell dimensions and depth. The Sovereign is 5.00 m long and 2.70 m wide, with a depth of 1.00 m at the shallow end and 1.63 m at the deep end. The Saint Azur is 11.48 m long and 4.45 m wide, with a 1.96 m deep end. Its greater length increases the distance between the shallow end and the deep-end wall.
Our swimming pools and plunge pools range from 3.00 m to 11.48 m long. Excluding the two spa models, deep-end depths range from 1.45 m to 2.00 m. Water volumes range from 6,275 L to 52,780 L. These differences affect the area and volume that each light must illuminate.
How many lights does a fibreglass pool need and where do they go?
The required number of lights depends on the shell length and intended use. Confirm the number and placement with your builder before construction. Light fittings, conduit and the transformer are part of the same electrical scope as the pump. This means where lighting sits in the equipment package is determined at the same time.
Pool dimensions affect the lighting requirements. For example:
- The Verona is 4.50 m long, 2.50 m wide and 1.50 m deep at the deep end. One light in the deep-end wall can reach the far wall.
- The Bedarra is 7.50 m long and 3.80 m wide.
- The Kensington is 11.00 m long, 4.00 m wide and 2.00 m deep at the deep end. One light in the deep-end wall does not reach the far end. This leaves the shallow half darker than the deep half.
Consider these factors when selecting the number and position of lights:

Which LED pool light should you choose for a fibreglass pool?
Choose a single-colour white LED or a colour-change LED. Then choose whether to control the light with a power switch or a controller.

The pool shell’s gelcoat colour changes how the light appears in the water. Review how the interior colour changes the lighting effect before selecting the finish. A white LED appears different in a dark interior than in a pale interior.
A pool automation controller can operate a colour-change light, pump, and heater through the same control system.
How is a pool light installed in a fibreglass pool?
In Queensland, a licensed electrician must install pool lights, wiring, and transformers. WorkSafe Queensland requires an unrestricted electrical contractor licence for this work during pool or spa construction.
The licensed electrician must:
- Install the light fitting and wiring
- Connect the lighting cables to the supply transformer
- Test the circuit
- Energise the circuit
This requirement has applied since 1 April 2025. Pool lights and other water equipment are prescribed electrical equipment under Queensland’s Electrical Safety Regulation 2013. The same licensing requirements apply to pool pumps and other pool electrical equipment. A licensed electrician must also maintain pool wiring and electrical equipment.
These requirements apply to fibreglass pools in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, Noosa, Redlands, Sunshine Coast, Lockyer Valley, and Somerset.
AS/NZS 3000 clause 6.3.4.5 specifies the power supply requirements for pool lights. A light installed in a pool must:
- Operate at no more than 12 V a.c. or 30 V ripple-free d.c.
- Use a SELV (separated extra-low voltage) supply
- Be supplied from a source outside the pool zone
- Have its own supply source
- Not have a protective earthing conductor in the water
The supply source is typically an isolation transformer installed outside the pool zone. AS/NZS 3000 specifies the supply arrangement and the bonding requirements around the light. Queensland electrical safety law requires a licensed electrician to complete the installation.
Pool light installation in a new fibreglass pool has the following steps:
- Set the light position during design. The builder and customer select the number and position of the lights.
- Install the conduit. The electrician runs conduit from the equipment area to each light position.
- Seal the fitting. The penetration through the fibreglass shell is sealed before filling the pool.
- Connect the transformer. The electrician connects each light cable to its supply transformer outside the pool zone.
- Test and energise the circuit. The electrician tests the installation and energises the circuit.
How do you replace a light in a fibreglass pool?
A wet-niche LED can be replaced while the pool is full. The fitting is released from the niche in the pool wall and pulled up to the coping using its cable. The electrician then works on the fitting in a dry area. The water level does not need to be lowered.
Before replacing a light, identify the cause of the failure. A broken light requires troubleshooting before purchasing parts. Common symptoms include:
- The light does not turn on.
- The light flickers or strobes.
- The light is stuck on one colour.
- Water is visible inside the lens.
Each symptom can indicate a problem with the fitting, lamp, or power supply. The diagnosis determines which part must be replaced.

The fibreglass shell and pool plumbing typically last longer than the lamp in the light fitting. The light is therefore a replaceable pool component. Owners can manage routine tasks such as balancing the water, skimming, and cleaning the gelcoat surface. A licensed electrician must handle work on the light circuit.
