A fibreglass pool lasts 30+ years. What wears out, what a cut and polish fixes, what the warranties cover, and when to replace rather than repair.

A fibreglass pool shell lasts 30+ years. The shell and the gelcoat finish cured into it age at different rates, and they are covered by different warranties held by different parties. The equipment that runs the pool is a third lifespan again, and it is replaced inside the life of the shell.
How long does a fibreglass pool last?
A fibreglass pool lasts 30+ years. That figure measures the moulded shell, which is the structural laminate that holds the water. It applies to a shell that is well made, correctly installed and maintained through its life. The shell and the finish on it are two different lifespans with two different warranties behind them.
The finish has a lifespan of its own. The gelcoat is the coloured surface layer on the inside face of the shell. What ages on a gelcoat is colour and gloss rather than strength, and a cut and polish restores both.
Neither lifespan is a resurfacing schedule. A concrete pool needs resurfacing every 8–15 years, from $10,000. A vinyl liner pool needs a new liner every 5–12 years, at $3,000–$7,000. A fibreglass pool needs neither renewal, because its gelcoat is cured into the shell at the factory and is not replaced on a schedule.

We order every shell we install from Aqua Technics, and Aqua Technics shells under normal operating conditions need no resurfacing and do not get osmosis. Osmotic blistering is water getting behind the gelcoat and reacting with the resin in the laminate beneath it. The layer that stops that happening is the vinyl-ester barrier laid directly behind the gelcoat: it resists water absorption, so the water never reaches the resin. Aqua Technics shells are built to Australian Standard AS 1838:2021 and hold Building Materials Product certificate BMP 520101.
What happens to a fibreglass pool after 25 years?
At 25 years, the shell and the gelcoat on a fibreglass pool are both still the originals. The equipment bolted to the pool is what has been replaced by then.
The shell is the same laminate that was craned into the excavation on install day. A fibreglass laminate is engineered to flex under ground movement, and that flex is why a fibreglass shell does not crack where a rigid concrete shell does. Against a shell life of 30+ years, a 25-year-old shell is a shell in service.
The gelcoat is original too, and it is the part that shows the pool's age. Colour and gloss fade above the waterline from ultraviolet light and below it from over-chlorination. A cut and polish restores colour and gloss to the gelcoat surface, and that work runs every 5–10 years. It is not resurfacing. Resurfacing is the periodic replacement of a pool interior's finish layer, the render or pebble finish on a concrete pool, on a cycle set by how fast that layer wears out. An Aqua Technics fibreglass shell has no such layer to replace: its gelcoat is cured into the laminate at the factory and is not replaced on a schedule.
Equipment is what has genuinely turned over. Pumps, chlorinators and heaters are replaced inside the life of the shell, and one shell outlasts several sets of them. We build and start up the filtration ourselves, and the shell that equipment is plumbed into is still holding water long after the equipment has been swapped out. Seals and fittings at the shell penetrations are renewed on the same principle, and the coping and paving around the pool are sometimes relaid before the pool itself needs anything.
What wears out on a fibreglass pool over time?
What wears on a fibreglass pool is the finish, the fittings and the equipment. Seven parts and faults age over the life of the pool, and the structural laminate is not one of them.

Spider cracking is hairline cracking in the gelcoat. A fibreglass laminate is built to flex under load, and the gelcoat on top of it flexes with it; past the point the gelcoat can flex to, the surface crazes. The cracking sits in the surface layer and not in the structural laminate, so a spider-cracked pool is a pool with a cosmetic fault. Improper installation is the most common cause of it.
What shortens the life of a fibreglass pool?
Five things shorten the life of a fibreglass pool: install quality and backfill, water chemistry, running the pool low or empty, ground water, and ultraviolet light. They rank in that order by how often each one turns out to be the actual cause.
Install quality is first. A sloppy install causes cracks, leaks and a fibreglass pool bulging, and improper installation is the most common cause of spider cracking. Backfill is the part of the install that does its damage years later. Sand is hard to compact fully, so it settles, and settling sand pulls the pipework down with it and stresses pipes and connections until they leak. A site audit is run before an installation is scheduled, and backfill is its own scheduled stage of the install rather than part of the crane placement of the shell.

Water chemistry is second. The maintenance routine for a fibreglass pool is pH between 7.2 and 7.8, testing once or twice weekly in season, and one full turnover of the filtration system a day. Over-chlorination is what dulls the gelcoat below the waterline.
Running the pool low or empty is third. A fibreglass pool is not drained for maintenance, and the water in it is the ballast that holds the shell down. A concrete pool has to be emptied to be resurfaced and a vinyl pool has to be emptied to be relined; a fibreglass pool should only be emptied for a major repair.
Fourth is what the soil around the shell holds. Water sitting in that soil presses on the outside of the shell. The water inside the pool is what balances that pressure, so ground water and a pool run low are one problem from opposite sides.
Ultraviolet light is last. Sunlight fades gelcoat colour and gloss above the waterline on an uncovered pool, and the remedy is the same cut and polish the rest of the surface gets.
How hot or cold can a fibreglass pool get?
A fibreglass pool does not have one published maximum water temperature that applies to every shell. The laminate is thermally stable across the range a heated pool and a spa combination run at. The laminate also does not crack in cold, which keeps freezing a cold-climate winterising problem with no Australian application. The rated maximum for a particular shell is the manufacturer's specification for that shell. Confirm that specification before a heat pump or a spa combination is specified, because the heating equipment sets the temperature the shell then has to hold.
What does a fibreglass pool warranty cover?
A fibreglass pool is covered by four warranties from up to three parties. Each one promises a different thing, and a claim goes to whoever holds that warranty rather than to whoever sold the pool.

The structural warranty and the surface warranty are the two that get confused. A surface warranty is a separate promise about the finish, and it covers osmotic blistering only where the document names osmotic blistering. A structural warranty that mentions osmosis promises the pool still holds water, not that the finish is unmarked. Six years is commonly cited as the standard cosmetic warranty term, which is short next to the structural terms advertised beside it.

One question decides what any of these warranties is worth in practice. Most manufacturers make the owner responsible for draining, bracing, refilling and re-balancing the pool during a warranty repair. Ask who pays for that work before comparing the length of the terms.
Is a lifetime structural warranty worth paying for?
A lifetime structural warranty is worth what the document behind the word "lifetime" defines it to be. Structural terms advertised in the fibreglass pool market include lifetime warranties, a 35-year term marketed as the longest in the industry, a 25-year term and a 50-year transferable term. They cannot all be the longest, which puts the number in the advertising rather than in the specification.
Four questions test the claim before the term length means anything.
- What is "lifetime" measured against? A lifetime warranty can be written against the life of the pool, the life of the original owner, or a stated number of years. The document says which of the three.
- Does it transfer on sale? The same phrase covers terms that are non-transferable, terms that transfer to a new owner for a limited period, and terms that transfer outright.
- What voids it? A warranty's exclusions decide which faults are claimable at all, and the document lists them.
- Who pays to drain, brace, refill and re-balance the pool for a repair? Most manufacturers put that cost on the owner, and it applies every time the shell is claimed on.
A structural warranty is a promise from a company, and it is claimable only while that company is still trading.
When do you replace a fibreglass pool rather than repair it?
Replace a fibreglass pool when the shell no longer holds water or has failed structurally. Every other fault is a repair. Fading, chalking and spider cracking all sit in the gelcoat, and chalking is the powdery end state of gelcoat oxidation. All three are cut back, polished or patched with the shell left in the ground. Osmotic blistering is a gelcoat fault too, and it is the one the vinyl-ester barrier prevents.
The trigger is structural rather than cosmetic because of what a replacement physically involves. A shell comes out the way it went in, over the house or the fence, on a crane. A crane is priced by the distance it has to lift over, in bands of 0–15 m, 15–20 m, 20–30 m, 30–36 m and 36–48 m. A pool shell is not a light object. Our 37 shell models run from 341 kg to 1,286 kg dry, measure 3.0 m to 11.48 m long, and hold 3,800 L to 52,780 L.
On an established block the shell is not the only thing that comes out. The coping, the paving, the surrounds and usually a run of pool fencing are removed to give the crane a clear lift, and all of it is relaid afterwards. A repair leaves the existing shell in the ground, so no crane comes in and nothing is removed or relaid. A replacement is a new pool installed into a finished backyard, at the installed cost of a fibreglass pool.
