How long does a fibreglass pool last?
A fibreglass pool lasts 30+ years when the shell is well made, correctly installed, and maintained. This lifespan applies to the moulded shell, which is the structural laminate that holds the water.
The shell and its finish have separate lifespans and warranties. The gelcoat is the coloured surface on the inside of the shell. Over time, it can lose colour and gloss. A cut and polish can restore both.
Fibreglass pools do not require scheduled resurfacing. Concrete pools require resurfacing every 8–15 years, starting from $10,000. Vinyl liner pools require a replacement liner every 5–12 years, costing $3,000–$7,000. A fibreglass pool requires neither because its gelcoat is cured into the shell at the factory.

We order every shell we install from Aqua Technics. Under normal operating conditions, Aqua Technics shells do not require resurfacing and do not develop osmosis.
Osmotic blistering occurs when water passes behind the gelcoat and reacts with the resin in the laminate. A vinyl-ester barrier directly behind the gelcoat resists water absorption and prevents water from reaching the resin.

What happens to a fibreglass pool after 25 years?
After 25 years, the fibreglass shell and gelcoat are usually still original. Pumps, chlorinators, heaters, seals, and fittings may have been replaced.
The shell is the same laminate installed when the pool was built. Fibreglass laminate can flex with ground movement. This reduces the risk of cracking compared with a rigid concrete shell. Fibreglass shells have a service life of 30 years or more.
The original gelcoat may show signs of age. Ultraviolet light can fade the colour and gloss above the waterline. Over-chlorination can cause fading below the waterline. A cut and polish can restore the gelcoat surface and is typically completed every 5–10 years.
A cut and polish is not resurfacing. Resurfacing replaces the interior finish layer of a pool, such as the render or pebble finish in a concrete pool. An Aqua Technics fibreglass shell does not have a separate finish layer that requires scheduled replacement. Its gelcoat is cured into the laminate at the factory.
Pool equipment has a shorter service life than the shell. A fibreglass shell can outlast several sets of pumps, chlorinators, and heaters. We build and start up the filtration system. The equipment can be replaced while the original shell remains in service.
Seals and fittings at shell penetrations may also be renewed. Coping and paving may need to be relaid before the pool shell requires replacement.
What wears out on a fibreglass pool over time?
The finish, fittings, and equipment wear over time. The following table lists seven components and faults that can develop during the life of the pool. The structural laminate is not one of them.

Spider cracking consists of hairline cracks in the gelcoat. The fibreglass laminate and gelcoat flex under load. If the load exceeds the gelcoat’s ability to flex, the surface can craze. The cracks are limited to the surface layer and do not affect the structural laminate. Spider cracking is a cosmetic fault. Improper installation is its most common cause.
What shortens the life of a fibreglass pool?
Five factors can shorten the life of a fibreglass pool:
- Installation quality and backfill
- Water chemistry
- Low water levels or an empty pool
- Ground water
- Ultraviolet light
This order reflects how often each factor is the actual cause of damage.
Installation quality is the most common factor. Poor installation can cause cracks, leaks, shell bulging, and spider cracking. Backfill can also cause damage over time. Sand can be difficult to compact fully. As it settles, it can pull down pipework and place stress on pipes and connections, which can lead to leaks.
A site audit is completed before installation is scheduled. Backfilling is scheduled as a separate installation stage rather than being included with the crane placement of the shell.

Water chemistry is the second factor. Maintain a pH between 7.2 and 7.8, test the water once or twice a week during the swimming season, and run the filtration system for one full turnover each day. Over-chlorination can dull the gelcoat below the waterline.
Low water levels or an empty pool are the third factor. Do not drain a fibreglass pool for routine maintenance. The water provides ballast that helps hold the shell in place. Concrete pools must be emptied for resurfacing, and vinyl pools must be emptied for relining. A fibreglass pool should only be emptied for a major repair.
Ground water is the fourth factor. Water in the soil around the shell applies pressure to the outside of the pool. Water inside the pool balances this pressure. For this reason, ground water and low pool water levels are related risks.
Ultraviolet light is the fifth factor. On an uncovered pool, sunlight can fade the gelcoat colour and reduce gloss above the waterline. A cut and polish can restore the affected surface.
How hot or cold can a fibreglass pool get?
There is no single maximum water temperature for all fibreglass pool shells. The laminate is thermally stable across the operating range of heated pools and pool-spa combinations. It also does not crack in cold conditions. Freezing is a winterising issue in cold climates and does not apply in Australia.
The manufacturer specifies the maximum temperature for each shell. Confirm this specification before selecting a heat pump or spa combination. The heating equipment determines the water temperature that the shell must withstand.
What does a fibreglass pool warranty cover?
A fibreglass pool can have four warranties from up to three parties. Each warranty covers a different part of the pool. Claims must be made to the party that holds the relevant warranty, which may not be the pool seller.

Structural and surface warranties provide different coverage. A surface warranty covers the finish. It covers osmotic blistering only if the warranty document specifically includes it. A structural warranty that mentions osmosis covers the shell’s ability to hold water, not cosmetic marks on the finish. The commonly cited standard cosmetic warranty term is six years, which is shorter than the structural terms advertised with it.

Before comparing warranty terms, check who pays for work required during a warranty repair. Most manufacturers require the owner to pay for draining, bracing, refilling and re-balancing the pool.
Is a lifetime structural warranty worth paying for?
A lifetime structural warranty is only as valuable as the terms in the warranty document. Fibreglass pool structural warranties may be advertised as lifetime, 25-year, 35-year or 50-year transferable warranties. Some 35-year terms are marketed as the longest in the industry, despite longer advertised terms being available. Review the warranty details instead of relying on the advertised term.
Check these four points:
- What is "lifetime" measured against? It may refer to the life of the pool, the life of the original owner or a stated number of years. Check the warranty document for the definition.
- Does it transfer on sale? Some warranties are non-transferable. Others transfer for a limited period or transfer without a reduced term.
- What voids it? Review the exclusions to determine which faults are covered.
- Who pays to drain, brace, refill and re-balance the pool for a repair? Most manufacturers require the owner to pay these costs each time a shell claim is made.
A structural warranty can only be claimed while the company providing it is still trading.
When do you replace a fibreglass pool rather than repair it?
Replace a fibreglass pool if the shell no longer holds water or has failed structurally. Other faults can be repaired.
Fading, chalking, and spider cracking affect the gelcoat. Chalking is the powdery result of gelcoat oxidation. These faults can be cut back, polished, or patched while the shell remains in the ground. Osmotic blistering is also a gelcoat fault. A vinyl-ester barrier prevents it.
Replacement is required for structural failure rather than cosmetic damage because removing a shell requires significant work. The shell must be lifted over the house or fence by a crane. Crane pricing is based on lifting distance, using bands of 0–15 m, 15–20 m, 20–30 m, 30–36 m, and 36–48 m.

On an established property, replacement also requires removing the coping, paving, surrounds, and usually part of the pool fencing. This provides clearance for the crane. These items must be installed again after the replacement.
A repair leaves the existing shell in the ground. It does not require a crane or the removal and replacement of the surrounding structures. A replacement is a new pool installed in a finished backyard and is priced at the installed cost of a fibreglass pool.

Neither type is always better. Concrete pools require resurfacing every 8–15 years and must be emptied for this work. Fibreglass pools do not require resurfacing and are not drained for maintenance because the water provides ballast. Therefore, fibreglass pools require less renewal work.
