Fibreglass Pool Repair: Damage Types, Methods & Costs

What cracks, chips and blisters on a fibreglass pool mean, how each is repaired, what it costs in Australia, and when to replace instead.

Can a fibreglass pool be repaired?

Yes. Nearly every kind of damage a fibreglass pool gets is repairable, and fibreglass pool repair splits into two jobs at two different prices depending on which layer is damaged. A fibreglass pool shell is one moulded laminate of glass fibre and resin. It is made from the outside in: colour goes down against the mould face first, and the structural glass and resin are built on top of it. What a swimmer looks at is therefore a finish, and the pool's strength sits behind it. Chips, scratches and crazing sit in the gelcoat and need a surface repair. A crack running through the laminate needs a structural repair, and it leaks. There is no panel to swap out. The shell arrives as one moulded piece and is craned into the excavation. The largest shell we install weighs 1,286 kg at 11.48 m x 4.45 m. Where the surface damage is widespread, fibreglass pool resurfacing renews the whole interior instead of patching it.

What damage does a fibreglass pool actually get?

Seven kinds of damage cover most of what goes wrong on a fibreglass pool. Each one involves the gelcoat surface layer, the structural laminate behind it, the bond between those two, or a fitting that passes through the shell.

Which layer the damage sits in decides the job and the price. Four locations are in play. Gelcoat damage is surface work on a shell that is otherwise doing its job. Laminate damage is structural work, and it has to be corrected before any surface coating is applied over the top of it. Osmotic blistering sits at neither, but at the bond between the two: the water is already behind the finish, which is why it reads as a surface fault and is not one. Fitting damage sits at a hole cut through the laminate, where the skimmer throat, the return and light fittings and the main drain pass through the shell and are sealed into it.

Not every complaint about a fibreglass pool surface is a break in it. Bay Pool Interiors describes gelcoat wearing as the finish thinning until the fibreglass layers beneath start to show through, at which point the colour reads grey or brown. The same source describes black spotting as mould penetrating a gelcoat that has become porous. Both are surface conditions on an intact shell, and both are resurfacing work.

How do you tell a surface crack from a structural one?

Water is the discriminator. A structural crack leaks and a gelcoat crack does not lose water, so the most reliable test a pool owner can run does not start with the crack at all.

Work through it in this order.

  1. Check whether the pool is losing water beyond what evaporation explains. A pool that holds its operating level is not losing water through a crack. A pool that keeps dropping and needs topping up to hold its level is losing water somewhere.
  2. Look at the ground, the paving and the concrete around the pool. Sunken pavers and a cracked surround are signs water has been leaving the pool into the ground.
  3. Look at the shape of the walls and the floor. A wall that has moved inwards, or a floor that has warped upward into a bubble, is a shell problem whatever the crack on it looks like.
  4. Then look at the crack. A hairline or spider crack sits in the gelcoat. A structural crack runs through the shell behind it.

If the pool holds its level, the ground and paving around it are undisturbed and the walls and floor are true, the crack is in the gelcoat. That is a surface repair, and it is not urgent: it can be booked in, or folded into a resurface if the rest of the interior is worn.

A pool that is losing water needs a fibreglass repairer to assess it now, not at the end of the season. So does a pool where the ground around it has moved, or where a wall or the floor is out of shape.

What causes a fibreglass pool to crack or degrade?

Six mechanisms account for most of the damage types above, and they act on different layers of the pool.

  • Stress beyond the gelcoat's ability to flex. Flex the shell far enough and the finish gives before the glass and resin do. What shows up is a hairline or spider crack in the coloured layer, with the laminate behind it unbroken.
  • Ground movement. Bay Pool Interiors describes fibreglass pool walls moving inwards where the ground behind them erodes, and the floor warping and pushing upward into a bubble in the surface. Ground movement loads the whole shell, so a bulge is a structural problem.
  • Movement in the backfill around the shell. River Pools describes United States installations, where the material packed around a shell holds the wall in position against the ground behind it. Settlement or shifting in that packed material opens a path to wall movement.
  • Wear and porosity in the gelcoat. The gelcoat wearing and black spotting described above act on the finish layer alone. Both are confined to the gelcoat, and both end its useful life.
  • Water working in behind the gelcoat. Osmotic blistering, known in the trade as fibreglass cancer, sits at the bond between the gelcoat and the laminate. That location is the whole problem: a coating laid over the top of it leaves the water where it already is.
  • The shell being emptied. A full pool presses outwards and holds its own shape doing it. Take the water out and nothing inside balances the water pressure in the ground around it, so the shell carries that load alone. Lowering the level on a fibreglass pool is professional work for exactly that reason.

None of that answers the question a buyer of a new pool actually asks, which is whether a shell built today still goes this way. The shells we install are moulded by Aqua Technics. An Aqua Technics shell with graphene reinforcement and the ColourGuard surface does not develop osmosis under normal operating conditions, and does not need resurfacing.

How is a crack in a fibreglass pool repaired?

A crack in the gelcoat is repaired by restoring the gelcoat, and a crack through the laminate is repaired by rebuilding the laminate. They are different trades on the same pool, and confusing them is how a homeowner ends up paying twice.

Gelcoat repair works on the finish layer only. River Pools calls gelcoat a coloured resin. That resin is the entire surface a swimmer sees and touches. It goes into the mould through a spray gun on compressed air, ahead of the structural glass and resin. A surface repair restores that coloured resin where it has been chipped, scratched or crazed, and it does not touch the structural layers underneath.

Gelcoat colour matching is the part of the job with no settled answer. River Pools' position is that a finish built up from several layers, metallic or flake, is a factory result a repairer cannot reproduce on site, so the patch shows. A solid colour laid down in one layer, on the same account, is a far more reliable match under a repairer's hand. Leak Inc advertises colour-matched repairs whatever colour the pool is. Both claims are on the record and neither settles the other.

Structural repair is a bigger job with a different method. Perth Pool Co states that the damaged section of laminate comes out and new fibreglass is built back in its place, and that this is the one approach that lasts long term. That is laminating work on the structure of the pool, and it is priced accordingly.

Does the pool have to be drained, or can it be repaired underwater?

Some fibreglass pool repairs can be made with the water in and some cannot, and the draining is the risky half of the question. A leak can be patched underwater to stop water leaving the pool. Rebuilding laminate or renewing the surface needs the water down, and lowering the water in a fibreglass pool is a professional job.

The risk concentrates in emptying a fibreglass pool, and the damage happens during the drain itself. SPASA Australia, published through Jim's Pool Care, describes an emptied pool "popping", creasing or cracking, and being pushed clear of its hole where groundwater is sitting under it. The same guidance runs the damage past the shell as well: the decking and paving above it, and the wiring, plumbing, lighting and in-floor cleaning gear plumbed into it. It puts fibreglass and vinyl liner shells at the front of that risk, on the grounds that both are built lighter than concrete. Queensland Health advises against emptying a pool while the surrounding ground is saturated.

Two things a pool professional establishes before the water level comes down:

  • The groundwater level around the pool. SPASA Australia's guide puts a threshold on it. Groundwater sitting closer to the surface than roughly 1.5 to 1.8 m is the point at which emptying the pool asks for caution, because the shell can move or bulge.
  • The hydrostatic valve. SPASA Australia's guide describes builders fitting a hydrostatic valve at the lowest point of a new pool as a standing precaution. Pressure from underneath opens it, and the groundwater comes in through the floor instead of lifting the shell off it.

Perth Pool Co props the walls with steel Acrow bracing before any water comes out, so the shell is held to its shape for the length of the repair.

An underwater patch is a holding measure rather than a repair. It stops the pool losing water until the pool can be properly repaired. No Australian source establishes an underwater patch as a permanent fix on a fibreglass shell, and it does nothing for a crack that runs through the laminate.

Do fibreglass pool repair kits actually work?

A fibreglass pool repair kit can hold a small gelcoat chip above the waterline. It does not repair a crack through the laminate, and it does not reproduce the finish around it.

The reason is in how a gelcoat surface is made. The coloured resin River Pools describes is sprayed, and the spraying runs to four conditions a hand-mixed patch cannot meet:

  • Thickness. River Pools specifies three passes, finishing between 25 and 30 mils. Under that and the cure goes wrong and the surface blisters. Over it and the surface cracks.
  • Catalyst ratio. River Pools puts the catalyst between 1 and 2%, with the exact figure set by the conditions on the day.
  • Temperature. Gelcoat and the resins alongside it spray best at 25°C, on River Pools' figure.
  • Dry air. Damp spray air stops the gelcoat curing out properly. River Pools notes that water carried in the compressor's air line ends up in the shell itself.

A kit patch pressed into a chip by hand meets none of those four conditions, which is the honest limit of what a kit is for. It holds a small piece of gelcoat damage above the waterline and stops it getting worse. It is not a repair for a laminate crack, and it is not a substitute for an assessment when the pool is losing water.

Can cracked fibreglass pool steps be repaired?

Yes. Moulded steps in a fibreglass pool are part of the same laminate as the shell. The same rule decides the job: gelcoat damage on a step is a surface repair, and a crack through the laminate of a step is a structural repair.

The test is the same one that applies anywhere else on the pool. If the pool is holding its water level, the crack is in the finish. If it is losing water, the step is a structural repair and needs a fibreglass repairer to assess it.

How do you find and fix a leak in a fibreglass pool?

Water loss beyond what evaporation explains is the signal that a fibreglass pool has a leak rather than a topping-up habit. A pool that needs regular topping up to hold its operating level is losing water. On a fibreglass pool that water leaves through one of two things: the shell laminate itself, or a penetration through it.

The penetrations are the skimmer throat, the return and light fittings, and the main drain. Each one is a hole cut through the laminate with a fitting sealed into it, so each one is a place a pool can lose water with no crack visible anywhere in the surface.

Working out which one it is, is specialist work. Mr Fibreglass puts leak detection and sealing on its fault list next to blistering from osmosis, damage done by hydrostatic pressure, cracks and splits through the structure, and rust staining.

A suspected leak is not something to watch for a season. A structural crack leaks, and the water going into the ground works on what the pool sits in and what sits around it: pavers drop and concrete splits. The water is the cheap part. The ground under the pool is not.

What does fibreglass pool repair cost in Australia?

Fibreglass pool repair in Australia runs from $800 for a localised patch to $20,000 or more for a full resurface of the interior. The figures below come from Fibreglass Pool Check and hipages.

The two resurfacing figures sit at different scopes and should be read that way. hipages prices the work by the interior area of the pool, so a 15 m² pool and a 36 m² pool carry different numbers for the same job. Fibreglass Pool Check states the range across the Australian market without breaking it down by size. In Brisbane specifically, Rod Cameron Pools puts a professional pool resurface at $8,000 to $15,000 or more.

Location moves the labour rate. Fibreglass Pool Check puts labour for fibreglass work at $60 to $90 an hour in South East Queensland and $80 to $120 an hour in Sydney. Regional Queensland jobs carry a travel premium of $500 to $1,500. Access moves the number for a different reason: a difficult access site adds $1,000 to $2,000 because of what it takes to get plant, materials and people to the pool.

One case is worth pricing in before you accept the cheapest quote. Fibreglass Pool Check records $12,000 resurfaces that were showing their original faults again inside two years, because the laminate under the coating was already compromised when the coating went on.

Should you repair it, resurface it, or replace the pool?

Repair when only a few areas are affected. Resurface when the shell is structurally sound and the surface is worn out across it. Replace when the laminate itself is compromised, because no coating fixes a shell that has failed underneath it.

Fibreglass Pool Check recommends a localised patch repair where the problem sits in two or three identifiable places. Its examples are a crack beside a fitting, one cluster of blisters, and impact damage to the gelcoat in a single area. That job runs $800 to $3,000. Resurfacing the interior of a 6 x 2.5 m pool runs $2,100 to $3,200 on hipages' figures. Those two bands overlap, which is the cross-over point in dollars: on a small pool, a single patch repair can cost as much as resurfacing the entire interior. Once the problem is spread across the surface rather than sitting in two or three places, repeated spot repairs cost more than resurfacing once.

Where the shell is solid and the surface is shot, Fibreglass Pool Check states that resurfacing buys roughly ten more years of service for a small share of what a new pool costs. That decade only holds on a structurally sound shell. Deep cracks, delamination and structural damage have to be repaired before any coating goes on, which is the difference between the $12,000 resurface that lasts and the one that fails inside two years. Mr Fibreglass puts a resurface at 5 to 10 days on site, weather permitting.

Replacement is the answer when the laminate is the problem rather than the finish, and at that point the comparison is not against a repair quote but against the installed price of a new pool. Who repairs fibreglass pools?

A fibreglass repair specialist repairs fibreglass pools, and the scope is wider than a general pool service. Reef Pools and Leak Inc describe the same working scope: crack correction, fibreglass reconditioning and refurbishment, waterproofing, osmosis work, recoating, bulges and leaks. That is laminating work on the structure and surface of the shell, which is a different trade from water testing and equipment servicing.

Two credentials are worth confirming before the work starts.

  • Licence. Fibreglass Pool Check puts the Queensland threshold at $3,300. Above that value, resurfacing work has to be carried out by a licensed contractor.
  • Home warranty insurance. The QBCC requires it on any residential construction job worth over $3,300 once materials, labour and GST are counted in. The cover runs 6 years and 6 months, starting from whichever came first: the contract date, the premium payment, or the day work began. The cover follows the property, so it stays with the pool through a sale. The QBCC pays out to a ceiling of $200,000, and the grounds it accepts are work done defectively, work left unfinished, and the ground beneath subsiding or settling.

Cracking is not one condition. At the mild end are hairline and spider cracks, confined to the coloured finish; at the severe end is a break that goes right through the glass and resin behind it. The mild kind appears where the shell has flexed further than the finish can follow, leaving the laminate underneath unharmed. A pool that keeps dropping below its operating level has the structural kind.

Can you repair a fibreglass pool without draining it?

Sometimes. A leak can be patched underwater to stop the pool losing water until it can be properly repaired, but that patch is a holding measure and it does nothing for a crack through the laminate. Draining a fibreglass shell is a professional job. An emptied shell carries the water pressure in the ground around it with nothing inside balancing that load, and it can move, crease or crack under it. What is the average lifespan of a fibreglass pool?

A modern fibreglass pool shell has a service life of 30 or more years. Under normal operating conditions, the graphene-reinforced, ColourGuard-finished shells Aqua Technics moulds do not go osmotic, so resurfacing is not a cost those shells are expected to carry. Where a shell does develop osmotic blistering or a worn gelcoat, resurfacing renews the interior rather than replacing the pool, on the condition that the laminate underneath is structurally sound.
