Smart pool technology is the equipment that automates a swimming pool's chemistry, filtration, heating and lighting so the pool runs to a schedule instead of to a manual routine. A pool qualifies as a smart pool when three conditions hold: the sanitiser is generated by equipment rather than dosed by hand, the filtration pump runs to a programmed schedule, and the heating and lighting are controlled from an interface rather than at the equipment itself. A smart pool is not a separate class of pool: it is a standard fibreglass pool fitted with equipment that satisfies those three conditions.

What types of equipment are included in a smart pool?

MFP Easy fits seven components on a smart pool. Six of them run automatically once programmed, and one is operated by hand. This is MFP Easy's install list rather than a definition of the category: a smart pool assembled by anyone else meets the three conditions above with a different set of parts.

  • Mineral or salt chlorinator. A mineral or salt chlorinator is the sanitation unit plumbed into the pool's circulation, after the filter. It passes pool water through an electrolytic cell, and the cell converts the chloride dissolved in the water into chlorine, so the pool generates its own sanitiser while the filtration pump runs. In a mineral system the magnesium and potassium are not converted to chlorine; they remain dissolved in the water, where they condition it. The chlorinator's sanitiser output is adjusted at the unit, which replaces hand-dosing the pool.
  • Variable-speed filtration pump on a programmed schedule. The variable-speed pump circulates pool water through the filter and back through the return jets at more than one speed, to start and stop times held in the pump or the controller. Daily turnover happens at a low speed over a longer programmed period; vacuuming and backwashing call the higher speed. Slower circulation draws less power for the same daily water turnover, which is why a variable-speed pump costs less to run than a single-speed pump. The schedule also determines when the pool sanitises, because the chlorinator only produces chlorine while water is moving through the cell.
  • LED lighting with a controller. LED pool lights sit in the fibreglass shell wall below the waterline, and the lighting controller switches them on and off at the times programmed into it. A wall switch requires a person standing at the switch; the lighting controller runs the lights to its schedule with nobody present.
  • Heat pump with thermostat control. The heat pump sits on the equipment pad and extracts heat from the ambient air, transferring it into the pool water through a heat exchanger as the filtration pump circulates. The thermostat holds a setpoint temperature, so the unit cycles on only when the water falls below it. A heat pump draws more power than the filtration pump while it is running, and pool heating running costs vary with the setpoint you hold, the season and whether a pool blanket is fitted.
  • Automatic or robotic pool cleaner. An automatic cleaner is driven by suction from the filtration pump, so it works the pool floor only while the pump is running, on the pump's schedule. A robotic cleaner carries its own motor and filter cartridge, runs its own cycle independently of the pool's filtration, and climbs the walls as well as the floor. Both types lift debris that would otherwise settle, and neither empties the skimmer basket.
  • Actuator-controlled valves. An actuator is a motorised head fitted to a diverter valve in the pool's plumbing. It lets the controller change where the water goes, to and from the heat pump or between the pool's separate return circuits, without anyone turning the valve handle at the equipment pad.
  • Pool blanket and roller. A pool blanket is a floating cover stored on a roller at one end of the pool. It reduces evaporation and overnight heat loss from the water surface, which reduces how long the heat pump runs to hold its setpoint and slows the loss of water and sanitiser. The roller is operated by hand, which makes the pool blanket the one component of the seven that still depends on a person.

These components are fitted across the fibreglass pool types MFP Easy builds — round, small, medium, large and lap pools — with the pump, chlorinator and heat pump sized to the water volume of the model you choose. MFP Easy specifies that equipment from seven filtration packages, each resolved to the pool's size class, so the automation on a plunge pool and the automation on a lap pool differ in capacity, not in kind.

Some equipment sold as smart pool technology is not part of what MFP Easy installs: brand-specific app ecosystems, voice-assistant integration, automatic slatted covers, and in-water chemistry monitors paired with dosing systems that dose the water automatically. Those four items are available in the Australian market through pool equipment suppliers.

What are the benefits of smart pool automation?

Pool automation removes the two jobs that dominate a manual pool routine: hand-dosing chlorine and starting and stopping the filtration pump. A mineral or salt chlorinator produces sanitiser every time the pump runs, and the programmed schedule runs the pump whether anyone is home or not, so sanitiser production continues while the house is empty.

A heat pump on a thermostat works the same way for water temperature. The heat pump runs to hold the thermostat setpoint without anyone deciding each morning whether to switch it on.

Automated chemistry shortens the fibreglass pool maintenance routine to testing, emptying baskets and confirming the equipment is running its program.

What maintenance is still required with a smart pool?

Pool automation does not remove water testing, physical cleaning or equipment servicing. A chlorinator produces sanitiser at whatever rate it was set to; it cannot tell you that the rate is now wrong.

Water testing continues on a regular cadence, and South East Queensland gives you two reasons it has to. A summer storm dumps enough rain into an open pool to dilute the sanitiser and shift the pH in an afternoon, and a hot weekend with a full pool of swimmers consumes chlorine faster than the cell replaces it. Both events are corrected by adjusting the chlorinator output, but only after a test says which way to move it.

Physical cleaning also continues. The skimmer basket and the pump basket still fill with leaves, and a blocked basket starves the pump of flow, which stops both filtration and sanitiser production even though the schedule shows the pump as running. The waterline still collects a film that a robotic cleaner does not reach.

Equipment servicing is the third item automation cannot absorb. The chlorinator cell is a consumable part that scales up over time and eventually needs replacing, the filter needs backwashing or cartridge cleaning, and the heat pump needs its air intake kept clear. A pool that runs itself still has a service interval.

Should you retrofit a pool with automation, or include it in the pool build?

Automation is either specified at the build or retrofitted to a finished pool, and the two options are compared on the same four attributes: what has to be opened up to run plumbing and power, equipment pad space, switchboard capacity, and when the work happens. MFP Easy installs the automation components on the pools it builds and specifies them against the pool model at quote stage.

An existing fibreglass pool can be converted component by component, subject to equipment pad space and switchboard capacity. A variable-speed pump replaces a single-speed pump on the existing plumbing where the connections allow it, and a chlorinator is added to the circulation after the filter. A pad laid out for a pump and a filter has room for a chlorinator; fitting a heat pump and its clearances later can mean extending the pad, relocating equipment and adding switchboard circuits. Reaching the plumbing and conduit under a finished pool surround means opening the paving or garden laid over them.

Specifying automation at the build avoids that excavation. During construction the conduit, plumbing runs and power to the equipment pad are set once while the trenches are open, the light conduit is laid before the pool surrounds go down, and the actuators are fitted to the valves as the plumbing is assembled. The pad and the switchboard circuits are sized for the equipment on the quote rather than for a pump and filter alone.

The term describes how the pool is equipped, not what it is made of. A fibreglass pool, a concrete pool and an existing pool of either type can all be equipped this way.

Which pool automation system is best?

There is no single best pool automation system, because the components are chosen against the pool and the site rather than ranked against each other. The pump and chlorinator are sized to the pool's water volume, the heat pump is sized to the surface area and the temperature you want to hold, and the controller has to work with the equipment already on the pad. A pool with separate water circuits to divert between needs actuator-controlled valves; a pool with a single return circuit does not. The specification that suits a small plunge pool is the wrong specification for a lap pool.

Are smart pool monitors worth it?

A smart pool monitor is a sensor that sits in the water and reports pH, sanitiser level and temperature to a phone, answering a question a test kit already answers. MFP Easy does not install water-chemistry monitors. A monitor tells you the water has drifted; it does not correct the drift unless it is paired with a dosing system, so the value depends on whether you would otherwise skip tests.

Can you convert an existing pool into a smart pool?

Yes, subject to equipment pad space and switchboard capacity. Order the work by what each component covers. A variable-speed pump on a programmed schedule is the usual first upgrade, because the schedule governs filtration and, once a chlorinator is fitted, sanitiser production as well. Heating comes last, because a heat pump needs clear space on the pad and a switchboard circuit of its own.

How much does a smart pool cost?

A smart pool costs the price of the pool plus the automation components specified for it, and the total depends on which components you include and what the site allows.
